H22 trannies are strong. What have you had to rebuild? Synchros?

Wasn't Papadakis running a pretty much stock Prelude tranny in his drag car? I know the shift forks are funky in the 5th gen trannys, but that's about all I've heard of as far as problems go... Not trying to flame here, but are you sure it isn't operator error causing your tranny problems?

pretty sure it's not opertator error

i've had syncro's go on me a few times....mostly in 5th gear and reverse. i know about the bad 5th gear fork and i've already changed mine...it's been good since...but i'm worried that i'll be rebuilding again this year after going to the track. are there aftermarket gear packs available for the h22a?

But why would you change the gears, when the synchro's are what's going bad?

Synchros aren't the same as gears. If it's your synchros that are going, strengthening the gears isn't going to do it for you. The only thing aftermarket for the Prelude tranny is a final gear made by a guy in London,ON and that's big $$$ and it's not going to help you anyway.

The only thing I can suggest to save you money is learn how to work on your tranny yourself.

You can get a Quaife sequential gearbox. what was the price last. $15.000.00 or was it $25,000.00?

I also heard the he was running a stock tranny for a while. The trannies are very strong and can hold up to almost any amount of horsepower you can put through them. What they can't hold up to is abuse.

Yea I've been fighting this battle for a long time and did some research. You could try to cryo the synchro's or the whole tranny for about 175.00, but in time that too will fail. No one really makes an aftermarket tranny for the fifth gen. (Unless you have a tiptronic, then level 10 does.) From what I understand the older tranny's hold up a lot better. What I am doing right now is replacing the 5th gen tranny with a 4th gen tranny it is supposed to be stronger and have better gearing. Should be done by the end of the day today, if not tommorrow. I'll keep you posted as best that I can. If this fails I think I'm gonna retire the Lude and start another project car. Maybe a Supra or the new 350 Z. I really hope that I don't have to sell the Lude. I love her.

Just a quick update. I have insatalled the 4th gen tranny and it is smoother than the 5th Gen tranny and there have been no problems as of yet.(knock knock) Also I beat down a Turbo Integra to 120 mph the 2nd night it was put in. Also I have a fully resynchroed 5th gen tranny with just 10,000 miles on it if any one is wants one $1,000.00 and its yours.

In a few months or so, I'll be making a decision of whether to sell my SS, or do a tranny swap....

If I do the swap... from what you are saying, I should consider using a 4th gen tranny instead of a 5th gen tranny?

Considering all the trouble that a 5th gen tranny would cause during the install, would choosing a 4th gen tranny be any more trouble?

Now that is interesting. I wasnt sure that the 4th gen transmission would drop right in. So the 5th gen driveshafts splines are the same on the transmission side as the 4th gen? If so, this might make my search for a transmission even easier.
