Crank Pully and Oil pumps

I've heard that the crank pully can shatter oil pump gears. How does this happen? I just purchased a used crank pully for my b18b motor. Any tips or things to look for?

the key should be tight. a lose key will cause the pulley to shake=bad news.

is that the only concern? should I get the pulley balanced? Can it be balanced?
