Default Using different spec plugs?

Is there any side effects using different plugs to what is recommended by Honda? Reason i ask is i had my car at the panel shop getting some minor repairs done, a few days later they tried to start the car but it wouldnt start. We thought it was electrical or ECU problem, we even went to the extent of swapping out the ECU and putting another one in from a friends car. STill no go, they then found out it was the spark plugs, they say its tottally fried. SO they put in som cheapo ones and now its starting fine, but im afraid it might cause damage to my engine cos they arent the right specs? Can anyone comment?
