Default coil over trouble

My buddy just purchased a set of adj coilovers for his 90 civic hach and is running into a problem in the rear. After he install the rears the car sits slanted to the pass side and the top of the strut/shock pokes out 4 to 5 inches out the top in to the car is that to be normal or did he do something wrong?
