Default Does a Quiet Exhaust Hurt Performance?

I am looking to get a new exhaust to replace my Invidia one (WAY TO LOUD!), I would like it to look stock as possible, be as quiet as possible, but at the same time perform. I like the Scorpion and the HKS because they look very stock, does anyone know how loud they are? Can anyone suggest a exhaust? Also what Diameter should I get so I don't lose power, I have a B16A2 swap with a few bolt ons also. I plan on doing Cams/Valvetrain @ some point in the future, so I would like to plan ahead for that. It would be best if I could get an exhaust that is quiet to at least 4500 RPMs.

Thanks

My GReddy SP2 is nice and quiet. And it doesn't hurt performance at all. You exhaust being loud does not give a car more power. As far as the HKS I have never heard on in person but I am sure someone on here will be able to help you with that.

I have a hks on my b16 hatch and its very quiet and suttle. You wouldn't believe how many people walk up to and asked me when I'm going to get an exhaust, because they think its stock.

Hahaha that's dope.

It's not about being loud, it's about the flow. My exhaust is loud as hell (in a good way ) because it's free flowing, no cat, one resonator, and a canister muffler. The less bends, the better the flow. However in an all motor setup it doesn't effect performance really. In a boosted setup I can see it being more restrictive since you don't want any back pressure or restrictions.

I have a scorpion and it sounds awesome. It's not quiet, but it's not too loud either. It's definitely louder than the HKS though. Also keep in mind that both are around 2" diameter and mandrel bent. They flow well, but you might benefit from a 2.25" mandrel bent exhaust on the b16 (depending on what your plans are down the road).

I agree that sound is not a good indicator of performance. On most Honda NA motors, you're fine going with a 2.25 exhaust. If you need to quiet the system down, you can always add a resonator, which with today's tech, does not hamper flow, but does help to drop the tone of the exhaust.

Also while a more straight through setup (less bends) may flow better, it does tend to make a system quite loud. HKS was always well known for good flow with legal sound.

Also I should mention I have DC 4-1 Headers, are they what is making my exhaust scream?

It does add to the tonal quality of the exhaust. Adding a resonator will help reduce the noise factor. The longer the resonator, the more of an effect it will have, but don't mistake a resonator with a glasspack, glasspacks will deteriorate quickly over time and actually make things a bit louder.

Well I have the invidia exhaust that has the "cocked" canister and it has a huge resonator (about 1 1/2' long) and a normal canister style muffler. It fallows the typical exhaust route (over the axle), but it's so loud at like 4k-5k RPMs and up. I usually shift at like 4-5k rpms because the terrian is rarely flat around here and I need the torque.

Well you have to take into account that the individia (sp?) is also a straight through muffler design, and elimiates some turns and bends as compared to stock - resulting in the "cocked" design. The HKS is a chambered muffler and follows the OEM layout exactly. Any straight through design while offering better flow, does nothing for sound dampening. That is why many exhausts of that similar design (ie Skunk) have the silencer for street use.

It does restrict flow with the silencer, but brings down the noise levels acting as a baffle and reducing the end pipe size.

There are plenty of tradeoffs and you have to see what works not only for laws in your area, but your use as well.

Someone that is mostly on the track is more willing to trade off sound suppression in exchange for better flow. If your car is in CA for example and you are mostly on the street, you may want something that will attract less attention by better sound suppression and overall resemblence to OEM design.

I have thermal research exhaust on my 90 hatch and it is really quiet and a big step up from the stock.

You should search for smsp post about changing the exhaust on his build d-series civic from 2.25 to 2.5, he picked up power and says it is quieter also. So for a b-series you may want 2.5 or larger.

I kept the stock exh from the cat back(no pun intended)
I put a good intake and headers on it.

That gave good perf and a very subtle note change
I like the sleeper sound

If you dont have the orig from your car, see if you can find one in a junk yard or ebay

What do you guys think about the RS*R Exhaust (Not the full race one)? Does anyone happen to know the diameter of it? I know on g2ic.com they used to say it was the best based on sound vs power. Also props to anyone who could provide a picture
