Default Question about water jets

Is it possible to just walk into a shop that has them and give them whatever they need to input into a machine and quickly cut it out? Seems this kinda walkin service would be pretty sweet.

Right now I can get things done from time to time but it's from a guy I know in Ohio and he can't always do it.

No. Thats not how that industry works. Its not a McDonalds. Just because you walk in with a CAD file and think it will take 10 minutes, it doesn't mean it will. Even if it would take 10 minutes, you have to remember they might be in the middle of doing a bunch of work for other people that gave them a couple of weeks. Expect it to take 5 days. If they aren't busy, you might get it done the same day/next day. If they are especially busy, you may not get it done for 2 weeks.

most companies will need a part of the same thing you want done (aka another flange, or a gasket). then they will program it into the machine (which takes some time). not to mention they might already have a crap load of work, and or contracts to deal with.

i run a waterjet shop and 99% of the time i dont have time for a walk in customer that wants to wait for there part. if they absolutly have to have it i charge out the *** becuase i have to stop the machine, unload the material load new material and program it for the new part then put what i was cutting back up there and it all takes time. but if the customer is willing to pay then i do it.

Not unless you have a relatioonship with a shop and give them lots of work, even then if a machine is running you have to wait. The key to making water jet business profitable is to keep that machine running all the time. Even if the cutter has time I have run into CAD translation problems which means a drawing might need to be resaved in another format. Like the last guy said if you walk into a shop as an unknown they will charge you a very high rate to do something now. I have stuff water jet all the time so I can usually have stuff cut same day.

one part is not even worth loading the machine unless your getting top dollar. OMAX's I looked in to are 175K+, Im not running one part for $30

I found this place that will make parts fairly cheap. Gonna order 10 peices since it's really not much more then ordering the 2 that I need for myself. Hopefully I can sell a set or 2 to cover part of the cost. Up to a 3 week waiting period!

http://www.bigbluesaw.com/saw/

Just got to print it out and glue the template to some thin wood and see how well it fits.

It's gonna mount to my bumper and the large hole is for the fog lights. The 2 oval holes are for VW style side markers since I also have to get turn signal lights on the car. I think it will all work out pretty well.

Just got to measure alot

If you put a part into the site it gives you a quote. It's pretty expensive if you only want one part. But 10 or more is a pretty good price.

This part I am getting is $115 for 2 parts and $155 for 10. I'd go ahead and get the 10 parts and if I sell off one pair to a porsche club member I have gotten back some of my cost. Sell them all and I got my part for free.

Hi dfoxengr,

We're trying to keep the costs as low as possible and make things as easy as possible for car enthusiasts, experimenters, artists, and so on. Many traditional waterjet shops won't even talk to you unless you're giving them $200+ worth of business. Which creates an opportunity for Big Blue Saw.

Big Blue Saw is fairly new to the business, but we expect that as our sales increase, our prices will decrease. We're shooting for a model similar to a print shop as far as ease of use. They make printed documents from your files. We make plastic and metal parts from your files.

he is just defending his shop. He's not advertising, I saw no prices quoted.

He was trying to explain where his shop was coming from and why his company could quite possibly be different from the rest. Quit jumping up people's asses for their "advertisements".

You aren't winning any friends around here with your shitty attitude.

You said hat most shops dont care about small volume sales. Hes agreeing...but he says that theyre trying to get to the point where they can do small volume stuff. Which is a good thing, so why dont you get off his back?

Whats not to understand about that? Hes saying that theyll be taking up all the small volume business that other shops wont do. I didnt see an advertisement in any way, shape, or form.

oh boo hoo ace.
i could honestly care less about being your e-buddy. just because you break the rules far too often and i call you out, doesnt give you the right to say ve got a bad attitude.
keeping the rules is a good attitude.
and you, trying to get something for free is not so good.

back on topic, i asked what it was out of becuase i thought it was kinda high, i own a waterjet and i do all the quoting and i would charge that much if you wanted it today, but its only looks like a 15-20 dollar part if you where to wait till you where next inline on the list of stuff to be cut. any ways that price seems really high but i dont kno every detail about the part though. that just my .02 cents
