Why point the subs towards the rear?
unlike high frequencies a subsonic hz speaker needs something solid to fire off of otherwise all of the sound waves will just dissipate into nothing. If you place the sub towards the rear of your car it will fire off the back, and bounce back towards your ear at a much greater power. This works exceptionally well if you have a hatchback!

Why? Because it sounds louder. When you point it to the back, you create a standing wave in the bass frequencies. Most people only care about loudness, so that's why the recommend it.
Is it a sound quality thing? Nope. It actually destroys sound quality. If you're aiming for sq, you can still point the sub to the back to increase sensitivity, but you'll have to eq the peak.
