Hi,

we thought a bit about some cooling system issues and want to know a few of your oppinions about the following concept:

instead of mounting a big FMIC we thought about installing two side mount intercoolers in series in the wheel housing and use the extra space in middle of the pumper for better cooling of the radiator.

i know most of you run think half size rads and are ok but we are concerned about endurance racing so cooling become a more important issue.

the main question is also not about if more cooling is needed... the main question i want to ask is: how much less efficient are the two side mount IC vs. the lage FMIC solution when it comes to make 20psi to make aprox. 350-400 whp?

how are you going to run that?

Seams like alot of trouble when there isn't really a problem with cooling right now and there are manifolds that allow full size radiators...?

but wouldnt it loose alot of boost pressure going from smic to piping then to smic agian

 

well the 1st comparison should be size wise...obviosuly if you cut the cores in size it will reduce its effeicency...but the only downside is that when air enters a IC its velocity slows down....and then gets cooled...then speeds back up leaving the IC....doing this twice will effect the flow of the system....how much...who knows but its the same reason some step up pipings from the IC on...

 

Too much pressure drop, this has been covered many times. If you are trying to hide an intercooler just spray it black.

 

Dont spray your intercooler black, ITS ALUMINUM! That would totally alter is cooling characterists and make it less effective. But if you are trying to hide your intercooler (frontmount) you can turn it, facing down at the road and pipe it that way. Then mabye paint the piping to it black so they wouldnt be seen.

 

dont do 2 side mounts. The audi TT's come with dual side mounts and its crap. Get a nice FMIC.

I painted my FMIC BLACK and nothing changed. My logs looked the same. So i guess your wrong

 

Have you considered an air to water intercooler setup? You would just a have a smaller heat exchanger in the grille instead of a huge front mount blocking all the air flow. Do you have slim fan mounted on the radiator flowing the right direction? Maybe try 2 fans if youre having cooling issues. And theres other things like spacing the back of the hood, water wetter, theromostat, a cooler fan switch that you could try.

Kill yourself, this is heavily practiced. Have you done research on this, or do you just like to blather out what sounds correct. You should show me and the rest of H-T your conclusive evidence through testing, and not talking.

itll work but def not as simplistic as a air/air setup....and to make a/w at least streetable a decent sized resivior is needed....and a heat exchanger is still goin to be a decent size to transfer the heat...just because it a/w doesnt make it chnage laws of physics

 

why not use one side mount intercooler, from like a 300zx. i know there is a company that makes some upgrade ones that cool the same amount as the front mount for the 300zx. ill get the site later. it might take some custom work, but it should cool it
