Seat heights
hey guys. i'm looking to get a bike this winter and i'm coming across a couple issues. right now, i have about 1500, so i was thinking about going to a dealer this winter and possibly buy an 06 model if the price range will be close to the 5g range. with that in mind, the problem that i'm coming across is that i am about 5'6-5'7 and i would LIKE to get both feet firmly planted on the ground. my friend has an 03 r6. now that is the bike that i was REALLY interested in and i was hoping to get that bike. when i sit on the bike, i can only get my tip toes on both sides of the bike down. i heard that the new gixxers have the lowest seat height and have a narrow seat which would allow for a more better fit. now my question is, is that how many of you have sat on the 03-05 r6 and the 06 gixxer? i do not want to lower the bike because i do not want to mess with the geometry of the bike. if i could just get my tip toes on the ground on an r6 which has a seat height of 32.3 inches, would i almost be flatfooted on the 06 gixxer which has a seat height of 31.9 inches? i plan on heading to a dealership to sit on a couple bikes but i just want a feel before i go.
I absolutely can not tippy toe whatsoever on my R6. Not even close.
I can tippy toe with one leg though sliding off to the side.
I plan on raising the seat height some more after the winter month is through. You should be fine, I'm only 5'-3" and I ride with no problems whatsoever.

dude if you really like the r6 just get it
flat footing is over rated
i have r6, i'm 5'7, i can't flat foot neither (ALMOST!)
seriously once you get the hang of things, its not that bad

First off....the best you can get for 5g is maybe an 02 or 03 in pretty good shape. 5 grand will buy you a ninja 500 and thats about it. Otherwise you're talking 7,8 or 9 grand minimum.
Secondly - don't buy a brand new bike for a first bike. Just don't.
Third - if the seat height is only .4 inches lower.....think about it. If you can barely tip toe, a .4 inch difference is not going to allow you to flat foot.
Finally - Who cares, like mentioned above, you ride with your feet on the pegs, not the ground. Flat footing is over rated. I'm 6' and can definitely flat foot both feet, but I VERY RARELY take both feet off the pegs. Usually just one.

please please don't go finance a new bike. You're not going to end up paying 5 grand. Realistically you'll end up closer to 12 grand making payments longer than you have the bike and hating life.
As for seat height. I would suggest starting on a bike you can actually flat foot that way you can gain confidence. Or, get yourself whatever bike you want and shave the seat. Maybe lower it at first, and raise it back up later.

You know there is a way to save money by financing. Just send in extra principal to apply towards the balance.

it doesnt really matter how tall you are, its all about the inseam.. I see some guys that are 5'4 that can flat foot bikes that people 5'9 can barely tip toe on.. i'd just go to the dealer and sit on all of them, get what fits you.
but if you're really worried about it, go with a ninja 250 or the buell blast.. those things are like sitting on a little stool.. i can almost flat knee those things.

Unless I'm missing something here....no matter how fast you pay or extra money you put towards the principal you still pay more financing a bike vs. buying it out right from the get go.
Not to mention many loans have an early payment penalty.

Oh no doubt bro. I'm not saying financing is the better route. Just really depends on your financial situation. Most of us do not have money up front to dump into something like that. However you can save some money by applying extra money to the principal when financing.

I don't think seat height matters to this guy, so it shouldn't really matter to you. One cheek sneak FTW.

Shaving the seat might be an option for you too.

The only time I can see a huge advantage to having both feet down would be when backing the bike up (on a slight incline) while sitting on it. I can do this with my RC, with one foot, kind of a pain in the *** but it works. Another option would be to get off of it and push it backwards.

thanks for all the replys. after thinking about all this the other day, i decided to just go riding. i borred my friend's 03 r6 and rode about 500 miles on it. i actually learned how to ride while riding those 500 miles. after riding it for a little, the bike actually seemed smaller to me (i don't know if you guys understand what i'm saying). i guess i'm getting more used to the feel for the bike. after riding for those couple hundred miles, i'm hooked. i can't wait to get mine in the winter.

Hahaha! Awesome! Although I'm not as short as he is, probably short legs, I do the same exact thing with one *** cheek.

i lowered my bike 1 inch and it feel great, plus im more comfortable ,
i have adjustable links with 3 setting, stock , 1 and 3 inch drop , so i can always put it back to stock if i don't like it..

of course. You need to correct the camber.
