Default Re: zc problem (zcboy23)

code 8 is for the Top Dead Center sensor in the distributor - first, check all of the wiring at the distributor, especially the orange with blue stripe and white with blue stripe wires, and make sure all of the connections are secure - unplug the round 7-wire connector from the distributor - on the distributor side of the connector, measure resistance between the orange/blue and white/blue wires - should be 350 to 550 ohms - if not, replace the distributor - if it has 350 to 550 ohms, check individually for continuity between the orange/blue and white/blue wires and body ground - if there is continuity on either, replace the distributor - if there is no continuity on either, check the wiring by going to the ECU and measuring the resistance between the wires at ECU pins C3 and C4 - again, should be 350 to 550 ohms - if not, check the wires for open in the circuit - if there is 350 to 550 ohms, check for continuity between ECU pin C3 and body ground - if you have continuity, check for a short somewhere in the orange/blue wire - if no continuity, try a known good ECU - please be aware that the above checks are not foolproof, as you are checking with the engine not running - if the bushings in the distributor are worn out, which allows the shaft to move side to side, the shaft may move enough to essentially short out the sensor which will initiate a Check Engine Light and the code 8 - if there is side to side play in the shaft, you probably need a new distributor - the real easy way to check it is to put a known good distributor on (borrow one from a friend) and see if it cures it
