Valve cover problem
i was putting back the five screws that go on my valve cover and one of them broke where the threads are. the middle one on the top. what can i do to fix this problem? i have a 97 ex
You can buy the stud at the dealer parts dept. Next time don't use a 1/2 inch impact to put on 10mm nuts. 10ftlbs torque is about the amount you can hand/wrist tighten with a grip of a screwdriver.
how do i removed the rest of the threads that are still in there? it broke only on the tip and its stuck in there. is there anyway to remove it?

You just need a deep socket. The 10mm (I believe) is down the shaft a ways. It could also be a head bolt. I think some of them serve both purposes (head bolt, and valve cover stud). Some of them are longer than others, so make sure you get the right one. I have a couple extras in my tool box. Want to take a trip to Louisiana. Haha. Good luck

something like this should help you. im not sure if you will be able to find a bit small enough though since the head of the bolt is stripped off from my understanding. well, good luck too you

i was under the impression that the upper stud portion including the hex section was broken off and only the threads remained in the cam cap or whatever it screws into on a sohc...
Usually just the small part at the top, with the threads on it will break off. It's the smallest, weakest part of the stud. It would take much more pressure to break the larger, bottom part of the stud.
yes thats what happened.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by BLKFLSH »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">You just need a deep socket. What we are saying is, the stud is actually a bolt, with a stud on top of it. Depending on which stud it is, the bolt part is about 1-2" below the top stud part. You just need a deep enough socket to reach the bolt head part. Got it?
see you dont know what your talking about. my car has five bolts that need to be put in five holes that screw onto the head. thank you people who dont know what there talking about
Here's a picture of one of them. Combination head bolt on the bottom, and stud on top.

Maybe they are not made the same on your engine, don't know for sure.

it is NOT a combo HEAD BOLT.. it is a rocker arm bolt ....that's what holds the rocker arm assembly to the head ..

Thank you HM.
But it is the bolt/stud we (rollercoster123) are talking about, right?
What I was trying to explain here, is that you only need a simple socket, to get the bolt/stud out.

yep.. there are some longer and shorter ones depends which one is broken,, but you are correct all he needs is a right size socket i cannot recall if it is 10 or 12 mm ,, to remove the stud and get a new 1 installed
