Default Drove my first Honda today!!! AND LOVED IT!

hi everyone. As i have posted b4 im thinking of getting rid of my NA r32 skyline and getting a dc2 honda integra. Yesterday i drove a 95 LS b18b2 that a local caryard has for 13grand AUS $'s. All of my mates told me to go and test drive one and that if I did that id proberly be put of Hondas for good. Well obvisouly they dont know what they are on about because even though it was an LS (actually called GSI here) I loved the way the car drove, i was so surprised at the power this thing had from an NAA 1.8 without VTEC.!! Unlike my rb20de the b18b2 seemed to accelerate fast and pull all throughout the rev range and pull very smoothly and quickly to the 7grand redline.

I thru the car into some corners quite violantly and quickly and i found the steering to be very precise, the body roll to be minimal and the understeer inexistant. everything i did not expect from a front wheel drive car!!, the only thing that i did notice pissed me off slightly was the torque steer when flooring it through 1st gear and changing into 2nd.

so yeah im very impressed guys, next i want to try and find a vti r version to drive and se whether its worth paying the extra 5 or so grand for. I wanted to ask you guys how the gsr's drive in comparison to the LS?? the thing i liked about the LS was that it pulled from any revs, no flat spots that i could detect or no having to wind the engine up just to make it get of the lights. Does the GSR have the same sort of ability or does the vtec make it a more revvy top end happy engine???

Also another thing I need some advice on is that iv found a very cheap GSI/LS that i can pick up for around 7-8 grand. Its gunmetal grey, complete stock, fully optioned and in very good condition. problem is that its done 197 000 km's. Do you think that for a car thats got full logbooks and history this should put me off buying this car or is it quite common for these motors to still be going strong at these sort of kms? would the gearbox also be of concern???

Thanks heaps for any info people!!!

Welcome to Honda. You'll like it here. How are the handling dynamics on the base model skylines (the ones without turbos, AWD, Super HICAS 2, or electronic trickery)

well i got 2 r32's. ones a gts t and ones just a gts. They both have the same suspension but the one in the gts is screwed.problem is that even to put crappy shocks in im looking at no less than a grand. and then all my bushes are screwed etc and they will cost me hundreds as well.So my car handles pretty crappy. My wifes gts't has HICAS, and mine doesn't, i dont feel HICAS makes the car handle any better. allot of people around here remove the HICAS due to the system being rather unreliable.

I think the integra i drove might out handle both of my skylines so i dunno, its not what i expected...

yes i really wish i could go back. heard so many great things but i dont remeber any of it. An integra is going to be great for whatever you want to do. drag racing, autocross, road course, you can set them up for pretty much anything. the options are seroiusly almost endless.

I have never driven an LS. I love my GS-R, and they are a little quicker in a race. Driving around town I would imagine the two to be pretty close to the same. The GS-R makes about 30 more horsepower, but until about 5,000 rpm they make nearly identical numbers. I think an LS is a good car, and, if you ever decide that you want vtec, it is basically a head swap away.

As for the Nissans... the bushings on Nissans suck. You are in Australia? If so, check out Whiteline. Their products are top notch. I had their bushings, and a few other parts installed in my 240sx (nearly identical to your Skylines suspension). For shocks, go for anything that suits your needs. If you want to make your Skyline more dynamic, source a larger rear sway bar from Whiteline. Combined with their rear sub-frame bushings, you will have a very neutral handling car.

ok cool, thanks for that.

yeah problem is that all of the suspension parts for my r32 are so expensive in comparison to what iv seen for the integras. not good for someone who hasn't got a huge bank account.

might just go for the LS then, seeing as i can getit much cheaper. unless a nice cheap vtec comes up.

so does anyone think that a b18b2 would normally be onits last legs at around 200thou km's??

200,000 Kilometers = 124,274 miles.

The LS should still be in good working order if it has been cared for. My GS-R has 140,000 miles, or about 225,308 kilometers and runs as well as it ever has. The Honda motors are definitely built tight, and strong. You could easily get another 100K out of that motor if you keep up on maintenance.

What time is it over there?

Bloody hell!! thats mad, and i thought all the rb30's iv seen with 400thou kms's on the clock with just a recond head were gr8.

long as id still be making good power at higher kays and still have a reliable car the high km's LS may be a good car for me to buy.

might have to take the drive to go checkit out

there is a deffinate difference between 225,000 miles well maintained and 225,000 miles not so well maintained. remeber that, take good care of it and keep up with mantainence and you will be fine.

haha, its 3:30 am here in minnesota. i work nights though. but anyways, make sure you drive a vtec model before you make up your mind, there are pros and cons to both but in my opinion i love my vtec, even though it is turbo, i dont feel it as much anymore. But before it was turbo, that kick and the sound of it with just an intake and no other mods was amazing. I know a lot of people will say the B18B is thier preference. im just saying keep your options open.

yeah i got mine freshly imported from japan for $5100 and got it all complianced etc myself, cost me maybe $6200 on road so nah it aint a real expensive car at all. Even my wifes gts't is a mint low km's e.g and cost us only $9500, skylines are quite common here i would say and yeah quite cheap really

Well if you're going with the LS .. you might as well boost it too

Also one of the bigger differences in acceleration with the ls/gsr, is the transmisson gearing,
Get a GSR trans for the LS, throw a bit of boost on it, and it'll be a very fun car.
