Does anyone w/ bodywork/wetsanding experience care to help me?
So some jerk hit my car in the parking lot and drove off, and when I came out of my office and hopped in my car I almost cried. I do beleive there is a god now though.. since my wife stole my civic this morning and too it to work and I was forced to take her car instead of mine (a 1994 ford taurus SHO). So Im thankful it was her car that took the beating and not mine.
Anyways, I figured the paint job sucks horrifically on the whole car, so Im repainting it using that "How to paint a car for $50" thing. The guide has been working well, until I do the wetsanding. I put on two layers, let it dry for like ~22 hours, and then wetsand. I use the 1200 Grit (SUper fine) 3m wetsanding sandpaper, soak it in water, and begin gently sanding. Then the problems begin. It starts to making a mushy crap (which I suppose I should expect, dust + water), but its black-ish. Im painting it a light grey, so I have no idea where the black is coming from. When Im done, I rinse it off and it leaves all these little black bumps over the paint, even though its actually smooth. I guess black circles would be a better way to put it.
Now, does anyone know why this is happening? The underlying paint was grey as well, Im putting grey over it, so where is the black coming from? I desperately want this car to have a smooth finish, but the coat only looks grey if I dont sand it, but its a little rough, so sanding would be nice. I tried waxing it and all that did was make it smoothy/shiny, but still grey/black.
Any ideas? Thanks a lot guys.

this happened to me also,if your using touch-up paint, dont anymore, its going to leave those circles and bumps on the paint, and the grey paint probably blended in with the primer coat,my best bet is to take it to a paint and body shop, and they'll charge you around $100 to $150
Too late! Heh, already layed down paint over the entire car.
Its not the primer coat coming though, Im painting w/ tremclad (rustoleum) right over the old paint. Obviously I fixed rust/dents and cleaned the car before I started. When I paint it, the paint goes on beautifully and loos perfect, but its a *touch* rough to the feel, like running your hand over the average painted wall in a home. But once I sand it, the tiny, miniscule bumps that you cant really feel start showing blackness. Like the tops are being sanded off, and the valleys between them arent really being sanded, so they stay grey.
Grr this is pissing me off.

Did you thin the paint out till its like water? I jsut did this and i still have to do a final wetsand and polish. You should prep the body with 400, then after 2 layers 600, another 2 and then 800 and so on. And ed341 you havent tried it so stop being a postwhore!

You act like people don't do that... I just finished my in my garage and it is not bumpy.
