Default 1300rpm rattling

I have noticed that whenever I am at or passing the rpm range around 1300rpm that I hear a rattling noise from somewhere in the engine bay. It seems that the gear or speed doesn't make a difference, just the rpm.

The car is a 1996 Civic CX and I am wondering what it might be?

The only thing I can think of is a heat shield on the exhaust.

Has anyone experienced something similar or knows what else it could be?

Thanks.

Yeah, mine did that too. Mine had a cat back on it but the stock manifold. The bracket that was at the bottom of the manifold that holds it to the block broke. And it kept rattling both of the broken pieces together.

But yeah, most of the time its the heat shield.

It's probably a heat shield somewhere.

A month or so ago mine developed a buzzing that happened around 3500rpms. Turned out to be the heat shield on the cat.

Check all your shields, make sure they're all firmly secured. Most of the time it's a case of it rusting through and/or breaking near one of the bolts that secure the shield.

OK, thanks for the input everyone.

I just gave the heat shields a shake and they didn't seem loose?
But without it being on a lift it's hard to really see everything, maybe I missed something.

If it is the heat shield should I be able to feel that it is loose?

resonant frequencies. gotta love em. it usually comes from some part of the EXHAUST system, from the exhaust manifold down to the exhaust canister itself. its one of the few parts of your car held on by rubber. like everyone else said check the heat shield. i also recommend checking the exhaust piping

Ah...yes.....make sure you check that as well. If the bolts are loose the pipes will rattle when they touch.

I poked around a bit and nothing really seemed loose, the cover on the exhaust manifold had some flex to it but I guess that is how it is. Have to actually get under the car and look at the whole exhaust one day, rather than just reaching to the first part of it.

Anyways, I realized that I don't think it does it in neutral? Only if I am engaging the clutch or in gear, does that sound consistent with a loose part of the exhaust/heat shields?

Thanks again.

It'll always vibrate more at certain RPM's. It's kinda normal. Mine does it so bad now that I solidified my mounts.
