Default 1991 Accord LX Driving issues: VSS?

Hey guys.

I am pretty sure that I am on the right track with this, but I need some advice from some Honda gurus.

My girlfriend has a '91 Accord LX (auto tranny) that has been having a few problems lately. Judging by the topics I've read, I have decided that the problems are related to the VSS. Could you guys tell me if I'm on the ball?

Here's what happens: under normal driving circumstances (nothing weird going on), the speedometer will occasionally stop working (ie: drop to 0), and the "Sport Mode" led on the dash will start flashing, regardless of whether or not she's driving in sport mode. Also, on rare occasions, the check engine light will come on in the same situation.

However, the other night when she was about to leave work, the car decided to do something ridiculous... it would back up fine, but whenever she would put it into any drive gear (D4, D3, 2, 1), the car would act like it was in 3rd or 4th gear no matter what. You'd give it gas, but it would act like it didn't want to go forward adequately. I have been told by a somewhat reputable source (hick-*** transmission guy) that the transmission has a "safe mode" that will put the car into a higher gear automatically, but that sounded kind'a shady to me.

The car drives fine for now, but when you let off the throttle, the car will wind down noticably quicker than it used to.

So.. are we looking at a mechanical problem? Or is this something to do with the VSS possibly? Her dad said that his mechanic told him that there was some sort of "eye" that needed to be cleaned (I'm guessing this is the 3-pin connector for the VSS?), that was two years ago, and the car ran well for a while after that.

Sorry to write a novel. Thanks for any help.

Try having the trany (CM) control modual (ECM for the trany) checked first. Your local checkers (or like store) should have the ODB tester for this (at no cost to scan for codes) see what the tray codes are.

That would be your best bet to start off with. Then you will know the trany code to go from.
