Default "True" Electric Water Pump?

NOTE: For street/strip cars...

Most of the electric water pump kits I have seen are installed in the lower radiator hose with the pump pushing the water towards the thermostat. Usually 2 small holes are drilled in the thermostat to keep the pump from burning up. The electric pump flows the water in the same way as the stock pump, but the stock pump constantly circulates the water in the motor while the electric one will only circulate the water in the motor if the thermostat is open. A restrictor plate could be used, but most people have found it cools too much and they need to shut the pump off, then turn it on, etc. This can create hot spots in the motor. A "true" electric pump would flow like the stock one.

To do this could you cut the metal water tube on the back of the block and run the pump there? This could be as simple as two "T" fittings with a block off bewteen them. Hoses from the "T" fittings would run to the pump. Thoughts?

Thats what I have done on my engine (well similar, no tee, just hooked the pump to the factory water tube)

I see what you did for the water pump side, but what about the thermostat housing side? Same thing?

What about running the pump on a voltage regulator just to slow down the flow?

I did some looking around and a few threads stated the GSR water pump flows 150 quarts/min at 6,000 rpm. Thats 37.5 gal/min. The Meziere kit is a 20 gal/min pump. Hmmm... A single small hole in the thermostat may still be needed to ensure it is cooled enough.

here's one that was just made for my car. Mike@t1 made it for me, saved me some time. The tube in the middle is not hollow it just makes the tube 1 piece. The coolant will flow around to the GE waterpump then back to the otherside via rubber hose.

I ran a similar pump / split pipe setup on the back of my H-series with a factory thermostat for a few years on a daily driver. I never had any problems at all. I just cut all the fins off of my factory pump since there was no "kit" available at the time. Just make sure you have a light fuse or something in place so if it ever fails you know about it.

or you can use a solid state relay and wire the relay to a user definable pw output and make it work just like stock

What would be sweet is an electric water pump that mounts in the factory location. Would that be that hard? If the pump was able I dont see why the guys with ecu's that allow inputs to vary the speed of the pump by rpm or coolant temp. Drill out some holes in the timing cover for the wires to go through. But you guys are messing with the back of the block so I am guessing there is more room back there?

Actually you are in luck. Davies, Craig had their new EWP at SEMA. Same as the black plastic mdel with the exception that it now has an aluminum body with 1" NPT threads. So you can go 1" NPT to hose barb, or from 1" NPT to AN fittings. They said they will be available to ship in the next month. They say that they pull 7 amps at full load, which is about 30 GPM. And that thing was very quiet as well. I really liked this pump when I saw it.
