Default a6/y8 hybrid OR d16z6

OK im making my final decisions this week before going forward.......

IM really thinking of going the d16a6 engine route(bottom half)...getting it rebuilt(new bearings/timing belt/seals...etc)
THen putting on the d16y8 head I have rebuild with the stock cam.
-From looking on the net...the y8 head on the a6 will give about 10.6:1 of a CR.

The other route of just getting a d16z6 seems inticing as well....however im not sure its compression ratio...may e 9.4:1 or so....either way...its 127 stock or so..so to alter the compression ratio by atleast a point....it seems the only option is piston swap which isnt an option budget wise.

So im at this dilema...as i can possibly get a complete z6 minus the ecu for $430CDN however I can only imagine how much the a6 rebuild would cost $600-800???
*Regardless......it seems like my initial a6/y8 hybrid plus 0bd-0 to 1 conversion and p28 ecu will be good. As lets say its essentially a 127 hp z6. Well add 1.5 points of compression to it...may be 10.5:1 in total, 3'' short ram/4-1header as i love high rpm power/my current 2 1/4'' exhaust and im thinking MAYBE it should be around 150+ hp....what do you all think?

And also a local guy was selling a zex 59300 cam..im sure that would be night and day from the stock cam...as in u would probably be a ble to hear sohc vtec kick in...but for now ill stick with the stock y8 or z6 cam...as with the zex...u need stiffer springs, shorter valves, and other clearance checks.

this is all going to be complemented by an si tranny(not sure which to use..89/90/91 and some decent clutch)

Default Re: a6/y8 hybrid OR d16z6 (mattie_96)

Sounds good

Or so I think

I personally will be doing an a6 bottom end with Y8 head within the coming weeks, I just havent been able to pick up a vtec solenoid, so I dont want to proceed without it. I've heard from many sources though, that an a6/y8 combo will actually get you into the low 11 cp, and with the z6/y8, you can be just a hair under 10, though my information could be wrong. I choose higher compression, and that's why I will stick to my current plan. I too will be using a p28, but plan on tuning with turboedit. I hope you plan on tuning as well, I dont think your engine will last long at all if you just go and put a Y8 head on it and go.

Anyway, good luck with it all!

THanks for your reply sLcrex.
AFter talking with the machine shop...it looks like even a mild rebuild of the a6 will be OVER $1000 so therefore I am going to purchase a complete z6 ($400 froma friend), and use my rebuilt y8 cylinder head with the stock y8 cam.
However as far as sufficing my high compression ratio need to go along with the allmotor plan, I DO have an a6 in my backyard, so I am thinking if its at all possible to use my a6(pm6) pistons in the z6. After looking on the net for the compression ratio calculator, the y8 head, z6 bottom end, and a6 pistons would yield a nice 10.8:1 cr with a thick head gasket.

However thats all theoretical, Piston-valve interference with this particular hybrid is another set of issues to deal with, but ill do research on the intergration of the a6 pistons and hopefully someone can comment in the meantime. THanks again
