How often to change oil in auto-x car
I have done 3 autocross events on the same oil and have about 500 miles on the oil. Is it time for an oil change? How often does the oil need to be changed in a daily driven autocross car? I don't want to be killing the life of my engine and I don't want to be throwing money away buyong oil and filters.
Thanks for the help.

Ok. Someone said this at the event I was at last week and I thought that you had to change the oil more often with racing. I will wait until I come close or hit 3k to do the oil change.

getting an analysis done is the proper way to determine when you should change your oil. Its like a snapshot of how certain things are working in your car, such as air filtering (insolubles), and if you have any leaks (excess sodium, headgasket leak) or running rich (flashpoint and dilution) etc, viscosity breakdown...also can tell you TBN, total base number; the amount of additive left in the oil.

It really doesn't apply to autocross. Oil temps don't go any higher at an autocross than they do during a normal drive, and the amount of time spent at high-RPM with high engine loads is relatively small, especially compared to a track day. My daily-driven CRX autocross/HPDE car has 256,000 miles on conventional oil and I change it at no sooner than 4000 miles (although it burns off a quart every 1200 miles so I top off the sump with fresh oil frequently). I use Toyo Roki S2000 oil filters.

If you're running conventional oil on an NA car in Ohio and not doing track days, you'll be fine with 4500 mile change intervals. Changing oil for your usage every 3000 is a waste of money, especially with the price of oil and good filters these days. If you're running a full synthetic, you can go well over 6000 miles.
As chrisw85 mentioned, an oil analysis by Blackstone Laboratories will allow you to determine the best oil change interval for your car and your driving habits - along with giving you an idea of the internal condition of your engine.

You shouldn't be seeing extra oil breakdown (unless you're running a SM Evo or something), but you'll see extra metal particles in the oil for the amount of miles since you are likely starting the car quite a few times.

That really depends on the run/heat format that the organization he races with uses. A cold, rich start with cold oil and no oil distribution causes the most wear to an engine and will leave more metal and fuel in the oil, but a warm, stoich start with warm oil and recent distribution won't be nearly as bad. Most autocross groups have multiple runs in short succession, which leaves everything warm and lubricated; sometimes you don't even need to shut off the engine. A few groups stretch runs out over the course of the day, however, which naturally means more cold starts. I personally don't feel there is any reason for concern, since it is only a few additional starts per week. Delivering pizza would be far harder on an engine than a weekly autocross.

I start my car a lot with out putting very many miles on it per start. That is a little bite why I am planning on changing my oil at 3k ir before. Does the S2000 filer fit on a d16a6 with moding it?How much does the oil analysis cost to have done?

Yep. I was there. I was the slow one in the white crx. Where you there and what what were you driving if so?

Thats not bad. When do I send the oil in? Right after I change the oil and it has 3000 miles on it or can it just have about 1000 and be ok to test?

Wait until you change it. It's kind of pointless to have an oil analysis done on fresh oil.
Yes.

Yeah I was there, I drive a black EK in street mod. Our club secured the site and the NWOR helped us put it on. The airport was very impressed with how we ran things so expect to run that event atleast once if not twice a year in the future.

That makes sense. I might have to wait 2 oil changes till I send the oil in. My 02 sensor wire broke so that would probably mess the test results up.

I don't remember your car. I will have to take a look at the pictures. I really liked having an event that is only 25 mins away. I normally have to drive 1.5 hrs to an event. I will be sure to be at the events when they have them. The only bad part of that lot is that there is so many airplane tie downs that it is hard to make a course that is not just an oval with obstacles, but I think they made a pretty fun course.

I ran the third heat so the pictures will be towards the end on nwor's website. We are hoping to get to use the area where the planes were parked for the next event, so that will help with course setup for next year. Are you going to be running the Fostoria event on October 1st?
I just looked at the pictures. You car looks nice. That would be nice if where the planes were parked could be part of the course. I don't think I will be running Fostoria. I want to be a novice next season so I can only run 2 events and that is what I have done. Also my parents are going to be out of town and so they don't want me on I75 then. My brother might come up and race though. He was the one driving the black crx in sm2. What was your best time at lima?
I have a dedicated autox Civic and when driven to events i'd change the oil as soon as the color turned somewhat darker. When it used to be driven to events, that would work out to like 300-500 miles. Mind you, it was a race d16, 12:1, race carbs with open horns, 9000rpm etc. Still blew up, lol...
FWIW, several times i've seen oil temps as high as 225-230F after 2 drivers x3 runs on a warm day. Whereas normal driving would see the temps steady at 170-180.

Oh ic. Are you going to race at fostoria? did you see the results were up?
