Which engine(swap) is the best for highway driving?
I'm trying to decide which swap I want to do, the thing is, I like to travel(road trips) and I want an engine that I can take on the highway and get good fuel economy, and what not...any ideas would be helpful...
Umm what kind of car you got now?? If its an Si why not just do Turbo. If not Id say ZC its best or of course JDM b22........ hehe
I have a 89 CRX Si right now...it's got a ways to go, but I wanna be able to plan ahead...I graduate with a degree in Automotive Technology next may and intend to head west...so I wanna be ready...pulling up somewhere in what I've got now would just be HIDEOUS!
try a mini-me swap (D16Y8) or a D16Z6, both our nice, light weight 1.6 liter SOHC engines that dont take much money, plus its a direct bolt into a 88-91 civic or CRX, but the only thing you'd have to worry about is converting the Dual point, to multi point conversion on ur wiring harness, some custom wiring, and finding which ECU u want to use,.. no worrying about axles or nething crazy.....130 horsepower SOHC VTEC engine, thats all u need on the highway if ur not worried about power or nething like that, but, than again, those engines DO have potential!(ALOT)!....the kewl thing is, its a super sleeper!...when peeps look inside ur enginebay, they see the normal SOHC engine, and no fancy DOHC or nething, and think nothing of it....but only the few will know wuts up! hope this helps in ur decision! for my real advice, jus do wut u can afford!...for now!

I would say a mini-me VTEC, full SOHC VTEC, or ZC if you want to save a little $ and get something that bolts in and will work with your existing tranny. If you go with a B series, I would say the B18A or B18B LS motors and tranny would be a good choice too.
I'm currently installing a 96 B18B1 into my girlfriend's 91 CRX DX. They make really good low end power and the gearing in the 90-93 LS tranny's are much better if you do a lot of interstate driving.

Unless someone can give me information stating otherwise, I am going to have to say any motor will be just fine for road trips. The question you should be asking, is what transmition is good for road trips. I don't know much on the matter of trannys, but I do know a friend of mine has a crx with a b16a1 with y1 tranny, and cruising down the highway at 80 in 5th gear he is on the verge of vtec.
If you plan on doing a lot of road trips, look into getting a hybrid tranny built. Try IMing "Red Civic Standard" here at honda-tech. I think he knows what he is talking about when it comes to trannys and whatnot.

one more thing about the swap I am looking into...I do want performance too...I'd like to race some(legally of course)...but I wanna have a smooth running car that has some *****...
well everyones encouraging to do a B-series swa for ya's, but i say, if you know wuts involved with doing a B-series swap into ur CRX(motor mounts, axles, tranny, wiring, hard *** werk, ECU, resistor box and blah blah blah.$.$.$) i guess all u have to decide is which B-series u want, and which tranny to use...this'll sum up which tranny u want.....

mini-me with HF tranny ( HF 1,2,3 aren't that bad for racing, but 4th and 5th suck, but that will help you on the interstate )...that's just me..
I REALLY like cruizing my B16a at 70 and 3500 RPM with my A-1 tranny from a 90 model LS... It's a great cruizer, and the POWER from the turbo... AMAZING passing ability
I've gotten 35 MPG on the interstate with it and the 550 CC injectors!

My B16 sits pretty at 4000 RPM. Sounds like a lot, but after a while, you get used to it. With the Greddy exhaust, and CAI intake believe it or not,it really isn't as annoying as some people think. It gets load at low RPM/WOT, but is mainly quiet off load in the middle. Of course road noise from suspension, tires and stripped deadening is another question.

I wouldnt do a mini-me for highway driving just b/c of the 'reliability' issues
If you want an AWESOME freeway cruiser, I would go with a B20Z (doesn't have to be CR-VTEC) with an LS YS1 transmission. This way, you get nice, low freeway revs (~3000RPM at 70MPH). But at the same time, you have a motor that has more than enough torque to pull that tall fifth gear up any freeway grade at speeds well above the speed limit without downshifting. Fuel economy is also quite good, at about 32MPG on the freeway (with a 1994-1995 P75 ECU, probably less with a 1990-1991 PR4). The cost of the motor is not too bad, either. Especially when you consider what you are getting for the money. And reliability should be awesome. If you are a little more short on funds, consider a B18B. It is not nearly as gutsy in fifth gear, though.
