Like the topic says, broke 4th gear on dyno with Liberty Cuff. I was getting ready for IDRC in Palmdale this weekend and was on my last dyno pull. I made numerous 755-738-744 WHP passes and about 540TQ @ 38 PSI...I usaully run 45 PSI. . It was only at 310 WHP when it let go. It's a Ls Tranny with brand new gears and the Liberty Cuff. I would understand if it broke at the track but it was on the dyno. I just swapped out a GSR tranny with no Cuff and it held up tons of 780-790-801 WHP passes on the dyno and the track. Any idea why it might of let go. What should I do?Dog box?Cryo the gears? What trannies are peaople using for 800+WHP for SFWD/Pro-AM
We were having problems with 2nd gear with the cuff in a tranny that was perfect before the cuff. We used a new tranny at IDRC this past weekend with no cuff and no problems... hmmm, makes ya wonder...

The cuff had NOTHING to do with it breaking. It does nothing but help the gearset.
It just happened! Get used to it. That much power on a dyno is hard on ANY honda style trans even the liberty gearset.

If its a real liberty cuff yes its fine. It doesn't have anything to do with how much power your stock gears can hold anyway. Its to keep the shafts from seperating and breaking cases. I have the cuff and still breack gears but not cases. If you want to stop breaking gears then by those from them too.

I understand I will be breaking parts...I'm just asking for any advise, any idea's on what transmission set ups people are running. I know that you guys are on the Liberty Dog box and still breaking gears.

My old CRX had broke 3rd and 4th gear on a dyno dynamics dyno. I know the Sport Car Motion civic has broke 4th gear on a Dynopak.
You have incorrect information. We are not breaking gears. We have broke final drives and in turn ripped out 1st gear, BUT it was due to us lauching the car with ALOT OF RPM, BOOST, AND TRACTION.
We have turned the launch down to what a normal human being would use and have had great success.
ALSO, it is not a "dogbox" it has the same shift engagement as a "Faceplated trans" it is in no way clutchless, like alot of dogboxes are considered.
Just clarifying your information
You have a good setup, BUT nothing that is unbreakable.
It is going to happen with factory parts here and there with out Rhyme or reason.
Sounds like it is has a good tune in it now, Take it to the track!
Less time it has on a dyno less trans will break.
Good luck
Hit me up when you want a Liberty gearset or bellhousing.

we have broken gears on the dyno too - only thing that we can come up with is the amount of heat involved with multiple back to back dyno pulls, etc
now when we dyno, as infrequently as it is we take a good 20-25 minutes between pulls with fans on the engine, and in particular the transmission to cool everything back down - seems to of done the trick

After every pass, we let the engine and tranny cool for at least 10-15 minutes min.

I guess we need to just save up for a Liberty gear set...it's just hard when your on a budget.
good thing to do

plenty of people are making that power and going down the track with out any problems. just go to the track and bring a spare trans, its a lot cheaper! especially in a sportsman class
its not the cuff link that causes the breaking its CALLED HEAT i have broken plenty of gears on the dyno from heat making pass after pass on the dyno not letting the trans cool down between runs
You better take a number......

I had racerstev heat treat some gears for me and so far so good. I am just testing them to see how long before something goes. I am not running the cuff in the heat treated tranny this time around. I am still researching gear sets now, but the libertys seems to have the most testing info behind it to support it.

What ever happened to the new libertys design, pics, feedback that you posted about in my thread?

i think ive been pretty fortunate on trannys. i used the same trans on the street for a long time, a full season at the track, and then another half season at the track before i broke 4th gear (i missed a shift for the first time ever, after that on the next pass the gear broke so its my fault) and then on that same trans after replacing 4th gear, 2nd gear took a crap in the burn out box, **** happens. after i broke 4th gear i didnt have time to swap it out, so i made another 3 pass's that event on it with all the metal in the trans which im sure is what took out second gear.
everybody always opens up motors and inspects and replaces parts and then doesnt do anything with the trans. the things arnt going to last forever! im gathering up all the spare trannies i can get my hands on now for next year. now i just gotta learn how to work on the stupid things, im scared of them haha
