Go scooters!
I put 6-700 miles on mine over the long weekend playing around Richmond, DC, Baltimore, and the twisties that connect them all. But, going even further than that are a couple folks from DC. The Post has an article on them here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/....html I hung around and saw the scoots go together, and it should be a fun trip for all involved. 3200 miles in 9 days.

Ugh... that's what street bikes are for (be it:super sport, dual sport, touring, cruiser, etc).
Doesn't mean you have to pick the slowest option (a scooter). I guess the gas mileage is great, but it's nice to have something with passing power. I think he'd be much happier on a dual sport.

Thats what the RD's are for. However, I would hardly say the Vespa is the slowest option. It would easily beat the DRZ400SM pigs in acceleration, and most likely top speed. It was built to do a steady 80mph plus for 10 hours on end. And from what I saw of it yesterday, the ton up could well be within its reach with a gearing change.
