Where do you guys rent your cherry pickers from?

 

why does it say there is a reply by froth and nothing comes up?

 

Why don't you drop the engine from the bottom, Just a question.

 

how will I get it out and the new on back in? Doing this in the driveway.

I ninja deleted my first post after I posted it when I realized the place I listed stopped renting lifts back in 2004. What I would suggest is the "Under the car" method, where you basically just drop it down onto a dolly or a creeper(something wheeled) and then jack the car up enough to roll it out the front, then you do the reverse with the new engine.

OR you can just go to Harbor Freight and get a Hoist for $200 or less.

Jack up the car (pull the bumper & fenders, which isn't neccessary, but helps a lot). Lower it onto a smaller jack or a crawler and roll it the hell outta there.

Best method if u don't have a hoist IMO.

Actually my dad's friend doesn't have a hoist...he basically got lucky, he found two trees next to each other that could support a cross member, put a steel bar cross member inbetween them and uses a block and tackle system to pull big block V8's out O.O - Real redneck, I know, but hey, it works....

I suppose it's one step down from a hoist :-P

from the bottom can be a pain in the ***.. I would start by just calling around locally at rental equiptment places like a total rental or something and see what they have..

 

I bought a cherry pickers from harbor-freight for $115. Then I rent it out to others for $25. It has paid it's self off, not to mention I have used it more than a few times myself.

 

i remember renting one for 40-50 bucks when ive seen used ones sell for 80-150.

I've never seen any problems with that method...at all...

I got mine from checkers last year for 110.00 It was a 169.00 but walked in there and said I heard they had cherry pickers for 99.00 and the guy almost freaked. He checked in the back and said they had one that was going to be discontinued for the new styles. Whatever. He said the best he could do was like 109 or 107.00 or something.
Ok I said load it up.
I paid more for my 1500 lb engine stand than I did for my 2 ton cherry picker. lol

Cherry picker even folds up nice and can sit in a small area of my garage.

Otherwise you could maybe rent one from autozone or check Napa or an auto store where you know someone.
I use mine about 2-4 times a year and now since I have one I do engine swaps for other people in town.
It has paid for itself definately.

 

I couldnt find a place to rent a cherry picker but like said above harbor freight has them for a good price.

Any tool or equipment rental shop will rent you a cherry picker. I have rented them a few times at about 50$ each time.

Or you could just buy one. Don't listen to these cheap asses.... use the hoist.

 

Only time i ever suggest doing it from under the car is when you have a lift. For a nice smooth removal/install the car needs to be completely level.

Hoist are everywhere and not that expensive, on top of that there a very good and safe tool to have. Ive used the hoist before to pull and put in motors from the bottom (MR2) and it makes sure that the car is level going up and down.

 

If you have no acces to cherry picker, Doing it from the bottom is easy as hell,
I did two of mine and there was nothing hard about it.

I slammed the car to the bottom, took off motor mounts, wiring, power steering,Raise car about 30 inches and leave on huge jack stands \, slide the motor out yourself, put new motor under place it ontop of wood until it sits level , lower car all the way down until you can line up the two top motor mounts, and then raise it a little bolt up the oher motor mounts, put on the wheels and drop the car, DONE.

I thought it was great because you dont risk having your engine rocking back and forth hitting inside our engine bay, .

IMO
