So my buddy bought a 1997 Prelude SH back in 2002...
He got it with 45k miles on the odometer and bought it as a Honda Certified used car. It had a bunch of problems after he bought it. Not only mechanically, but half of the body looks like its primer red now and half is still glossy. Thats all besides the point...
About 2.5 years ago, was driving maybe 10mph and his timing belt snapped with about 50k miles. He ended up taking it to the dealer and having it replaced for $600! Well, when we went to pick it up, it ran like complete crap, blowing all kinds of smoke and having a terrible sounding idle. They fought and fought with Honda, but they wouldnt do anything for him.
So the car has been sitting 2.5 years since then. Until Friday night, we pulled the H22A4 out so start messing with it and to get his car out of the garage. I checked this VIN on his chassis and matched it up the the motor and they were different. What kind of crap is this? How can Honda certify a car that doesnt even have the original engine?
I really dont know why I posted this. I guess just to get other peoples reactions. Whta do you guys think about this whole situation?

damn man, that straight up sucks. Maybe your friend can file some kind of complaint or small claims for having this happen. If Honda certfied the car and made sure everything was great, then there should be some kind of action taken...When your friend bought the car, did it say it had Warranty or Sold as-is
It had the remaining 5 year/100k mile warranty that originally came with it. Which ended not too long after he bought it. But still the whole thing is a load of BS.
that sucks.... if nothing else.... after the timing belt broke and they "fixed" it, it ran bad? if it wasn't correct then, he should've filed some sort of suit and gotten it fixed then...I def would not have walked away with a screwed up head and a 600 dollar bill
What kind of Honda dealership is that! damn! Man that sucks. I would be so pissed! You should carfax both vin# to see what it says about both of them it would be interesting to see! And they really can't certify a car if it is not the correct engine that sucks donkey *****!
Honda dealer mechanics are just retarded anyway don't trust them at all my timing belt got replaced by a import shop, but something was wrong with it when I got it back and wasn't sure what, well took it to honda and then whatever was I was just going to give the other shop the bill since I told them something was wrong and they said it was ok!? anyway Honda was like uhhhh valves are bent and we are going to have to replace alot of the internals I was like No give me my ******* car back! Then when I went to pick it up they were like nothing is wrong with it is ok and they pulled it around it was idleing and then it just died and I was OH nothing wrong with it .....anyway had a friends mechanic which was with honda for 25 years and then opened there own shop looked at my car and the auto. tensioner was bent and it was the new one the other shop broke the new one trying to put it on anyway fixed it and now it is fine. But I will never let Honda touch my car again!

Correct me if i'm wrong but you were within the warranty period for the timing belt so why did you have to pay to get it replaced? Not only that but why didnt the dealership look at the car after you got the work done to verify that they at least did it correct and set timing and all. The unmatching vin/serial numbers might be leverage for them to void your warranty so be careful when trying to place blame.

this is the reason i dont deal with dealerships. There are SOME good ones. But a majority of them will see that your car is modified and they wont want to touch it for any reason. For instance, i had a torn up cv axle when i was younger. Took it to honda and they told me there was nothing wrong. 3 days later, it broke.
Honda Certified means nothing more than they were supposed to do an inspection and have a 3rd party warranty usually including a deductible. It is really just a waste of money.
