That camera should treat you pretty well. I was happy with my old sony p&s and it was a lower model. I would suggest... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...56631
as an entry cam as well. And its a little cheaper.

Personally I would go with the canon. However you should probably go up to the store and play around with the cameras and get a feel for them both. A lot of your decision will be made on how the camera feels in your hands and how easy the options and controls are to operate for YOU.

Get the Canon. If you end up stepping up to a 20D/30D/5D/etc you should have no problem using it because the functions/interface will pretty much be the same

I agree; if you go the pro-sumer route, get the Canon.

yo, I work at best buy, the canon has a swivel screen, easy video mode and ****. I'd say step it up to a D-SLR, Canon Rebel XTi, real fresh, $899 price tag but comes with 10.1mp. 3fps, black shell, 9point focus, cmos image sensor, settings on screen, quick startup, 18-55 kit lens(as always). Do that one for real, i've been looking at that one as compared to the 30D and it takes the cake for 600 less.

Save a few more $$$ and get a Canon 20D instead... Seriously, it's worth it.

20D over the XTi?, more cash, less quality. all i've found different is the 5fps as compared to 3fps and the carbon body... but I guess that takes the cake on h-t. Everyone loves carbon.

If you want a KILLER camera, that rapes the little pocket cameras, look into the Canon S2-IS.

It's THE BEST point and shoot camera out, and you can find it under $300 easily.

It's a larger camera, not quite a dSLR however, but alot of the functions are the same. It's very capable in the right hands.

It also takes very good quality movies as well.

So I assume the Canon S3-IS would be even better?

yea, the s31s is better, but as with all point and shoots, DELAY!! No shutter=no true timing. no lens options ect... hell if you're lookin at price e-bay a digital rebel from years ago. 4-500 now.

example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-EOS-...wItem

tell me it's not a great camera and i'll call you a liar. I used one for 3 year and never had a problem.

So a S3-IS would be a good camera for going on a vacation but taking pictures of the quads in the air when we go out riding wouldn't work too well because it is going to be slow? Can't I adjust how quick it takes the picture?

Yeah, I would take the 20d over the xti.

How is it less quality? Better body, easier to use functions, great view finder, etc.

by quality I ment 10.1mp. functions are just as easy to use, view finder is the only differnce i've found other than the body

10.1mp and 8.2mp aren't going to make your pictures look any better on your typical 17/19 inch monitor resolution.
