Default Tiptronic vs. 5 Speed

so i'm in the process of selling my 93 SI:

and looking into a 98 VTEC w/ the AT/Tiptronic trans, i thought i remember reading some stuff on here in the past about Tiptronics being unreliable, etc. Have any of you guys with these trannys had any issues? Would i be better off looking for a 5-speed? and no i don't plan on beating the **** out of it

If you cant find a clean 5 speed, just do a manual swap. Triptronic blows.

i found like 6 5th gens around me, and they ALL have Tiptronic

how much would a manual swap be? i had the tranny replaced on my 4g and it was like 2300 or so

save your money and find a nice 5spd, the swap isnt as easy as it seems, AT ALL. ive owned an auto 98 lude and after a year or so i couldnt wait to get rid of it, now i have a 5spd Type SH and its 10000000X better

to answer your question yes the tiptronics are unreliable. Even if it runs good it's just a matter of time until something happens. I myself had a 97 prelude auto. the tranny was good and then one day all of a sudden its crapped out on me. I fixed and about a year later I sold it and bought a 98 5spd. I would try and find a 5spd before you buy an auto.

clean 4th gen btw

I have a 97 auto/TT tranny with 111, 695 miles on it and its still kickin 100%, just slower than a 5spd. I have drove both. I SOOO wish I had a 5 spd. Only b/c you are actually in control of a car if its a 5sp. Feels soo much better. I think its all in preference, u just have to be careful who u buy that car from and how good its been taken care of!

yeah i drove my friend's 00 auto lude for a better half of a year. i must say that tiptronic, while amusing for for first week, started getting on my nerves. it has issues. i couldn't begin to describe the horror. and i finally got my 98 manual lude. what a world of a difference. i'll never go back to auto.

get a manual.
check out craigslist.
cali has a bunch.
for cheap.

Use the SEARCH FUNCTION and you'll find plenty of threads on why the 5spd is better than the Automatic

5spd > Auto

The autos are dogs off the line but they have reasonable pickup from a roll.
