I want to cut my valve cover in the 'moon' design, as opposed to chopping the whole edge off. But, I'm not sure how much to cut, and where, etc, etc..

Is there a diagram, or measurements, or anything that can help determine where I should cut the valve cover? I don't just want to go to town and destroy the thing..

Just get a straight edge, a measuring tape, and a compass.

 

Umm.. care to elaborate?

Where do I make the circles? What radius? Etc..

 

Everyone I know that's cut theirs popped the valve cover on and off to visually draw the center of each gear. Then use a compass to make a circle. Again, taking the valve cover on and off to draw the circles (err moons) and insuring that the circles match the shape of the gears. It's basically trial and error.

Right, but I'm doing all this work on an extra valve cover I have laying around, not the one on the car right now.

borrow someone else's cam gears and lay them beside the valve cover....duh... haha just trace it.

 

Does the bottom of the valve cover match up perfectly with half of the cam gear? In other words, the cut I would make would be a perfect semi-circle?

I'm sure I can figure it out.. I was just hoping somebody had precise instructions.
