Default CRX HF actual mpg / owners?

Hey guys,

Since the search function won't accept "hf" I wanted to see if I could get some feedback from actual owners of the HF model.

First, I'm thinking about buying one, and I've read the specs, 49/52 est mpg. I just wondered in reality if you drive it 80% highway what kind of MPG could you get?

The one I'm looking at has 155k on it, and I've done a few engine pulls/rebuilds. I was thinking if it's down on mpg, pulling the engine and re-ringing and having the head cleaned up to restore some of the power. Is it pretty cheap for parts or is it tough to find the specfic parts for the HF? Could I shave the head for a little more compression without running into problems?

My goal would be to maybe add an intake or exhaust if it didn't hurt mpg too much and then a nice set of shocks/springs. I assume you can put a monster rear swaybar on it and beef it up suspension wise like a standard CRX. This wouldn't be my first honda, they seem pretty easy to work on. Any responses would be great, thanks.

You could definately blow away the EPA specs on the car. Check out http://www.gassavers.org for some driving tips and such,

There is a lot more than 5mpg difference between the si and hf.

I've been told by local HF owners that they get at least 40 city, and up to 60 highway.

When I had the old HF Motor (D15B6) I would get a minimum of 37 mpg. The best I ever got was a trip from Burlington NC to Charlotte NC record 55 mpg. That's measured, not guesstimated by the gauge

i used to get anywhere from 450-500mi to the tank! I made it from san ysidro, ca to stockton, ca on one tank of gas. (460+mi) I rode in 5th gear the whole way and didn't go over 65mph That's with new tires, new o2 sensor...and i had just replaced the fuel filter.

awsome thanks for all the replies, so basically it sounds like avg mixed driving is around 40, with all hwy being 50. This car is very tempting...

You don't have the HF final drive, HF engine, or HF lightweight chassis. An actual HF will do over 50 easily.

You are definitely a moron.

I have a 90 HF with a DX block and head. It's beat all to **** and smokes. Two weeks ago I drove to lansing Michagan with my wife to pick up a new car for her. I filled up right before I left and filled up again when we got there. On the way I drove between 65 and 75 mph and got 55 mpg. That's with no drafting and driving through Chicago too. I couldn't believe it. Any way when I bought the car I didn't know it had the DX motor in it so I bought one on Ebay. I am rebuilding it right now. I paid $72 for new Hastings piston rings, $175 to have the valves ground, seats cut, new valve guides on the exhaust side and had the head milled to get a nice new surface to work with. The valve seals are $30 as well as new rod bearings. You can probably do a complete rebuild for less than $400 if you do most of the work.

On a side note when I get the new motor in, I will have a complete motor, spare HF transmission, intake, throttle body, the exhaust manifold and cat, starter and an alternator and a bunch of other stuff I am forgetting. I will be wanting to trade all that stuff for a 24 pack of MGD bottles. If anyone lives near southern Wi, pm me if you want it.

Oh yeah, good luck!

yeah, i know an actual hf will do quite well on the highway, im just saying that the last gear is considerably different than the other 5th gears from different crx's and will contribute a lot to gas mileage. considering before I put that gear in I was only getting 30.
