Just a question for anyone who has this mod out there.
I have installed the 2.83 kit on my EF racer, and I am getting quite a bit of play. Is this normal? How can I correct this?
I had my mechanic tighten everything to factory spec but its still pretty bad.
On another note, does anyone know what the stock ratio was for a 1991 Civic SI ?

i'm assuming you used the right parts and everthing is put together correctly (you need a hf or dx rack on a crx- though i don't know the compatibility issues with a civic).
i'm in the process of installing one so i can't give any feedback on feel, but i haven't heard anyone complain of play after it was adjusted properly. i do know that that play adjustment (the big honkin bolt) can he a little trial and error, so i'd recommend going at it a bit more and seeing how it feels.

I will see if I can post a video to show how much play there is in there. It is quite ridiculous... maby 1-2". I had used a manual rack from a civic SI which is exactly what quaife America told me to do.
hm. i can't find the thread with side by side pics of a crx si and dx/hf rack. it is around the archives though, so you should be able to find it without too much trouble. i don't, however, know anything regarding the details of the civic si rack. hopefully someone else will chime in.

I am not sure which rack it was installed to, DX or SI... please do give me some way of checking which rack it is. But the unit is definatly installed and running, but this play is horrendus.. especially since this car is a track only car im not liking it at all.
yeah, as rsca pointed out, did you use the right rack? you SHOULDNT use the Si rack. DX or Hf rack only.
secondly, did you install a fresh new rack end bushing? as well as tighten the gearbox at the pinion? the bushing should definately be replaced, and tightening the gearbox is a must.
if you didnt do any of these things, thats your problem.

look under the rack. near the pinion gearbox, there should be a "V" or "VAR" stamped on it. if it is, then its an Si rack.
do you HAVE an Si? did you use the same rack off your car?

we are actually not 100% sure if it is a si or DX... SI has a sunroof and ours has a sealed off sunroof (so our best guess is it is a SI)... do note we bought it partially modified as a track car and did it all over agin and running it in Ontario Regional Touring GT (T2 Class)
The car is tied down in out trailer, but i went underneath with a flashlight and a camera, and my photos show that there are no markings (do note i also have a brand new SI rack in the trailer and that definatly has those markings on it.. but thats just a stock unit)

well as long as you know where to locate the identifying stamping on the Si rack, then you can be sure about the rack on the car.
did you tighten the pinion and replace the rack end bushing? it really is that important.
you can tell for sure if the chassis is an Si or not if it has the stock rear sway bar brackets as well.

my appologies.. completly over looked that one....
called my mechanic.. he saids he tightened the pinion the most possible within the defined limit... the bushings he says he does not believe were replaced but said they definatly were in perfect condition and not dried up even the slightest bit

wrong answer.
its a plastic bushing. needs to be replaced.
and i would retighten the gearbox yourself.

the factory "spec" is just nominal. you tighten til you are happy. tighten it then go for a drive, then keep adjusting until it feels right. whatever "right" is to you.

but would that be the problem to give 2" of play?.... the play seems to move throught the column and is extremly light or takes no effort at all... and then you feel when the tires actually move

alight... thanx a mill for the help.. I will let you know what happens...
as for the final question.... part number for the rack end bushings? or would it differ from SI to DX? .. just order from the factory SI rack end bushings for a 1991 Civic si ?

only if you promise this is the last question... bushing is the same.

ok.. wtf.... i take the car out of the trailer and jack it up.... get all my tools ready and vola... there is no room to put my tools. Can not fit a rachet on the large lock nut, or on the guide screw. One the sway bar is in the way and what i would guess to be the subframe is blocking the way of any socket. what to do now ?
