stay consistent... that seems to be your biggest problem....

consistent heat.. consistent speed...

work on that.. and you will be golden!

and commenting on your pic... it isnt too bad.. you got way too hot there at the end... and it looks like there isnt enough filler metal about halfway down.. definately too hot!

dont brush it next time before you post a pic! show us what it really looks like...

Did you cut the pieces down, or are those the sizes ? Working on smaller metal is always harder, the heat has no where to go, so you will have to work the pedal more. Like 929 said, looks to be to hot, and not enough filler.

small pieces are a bitch.. you will have to work the pedal.. the plate is gonna heat up fast! so you are gonna have to compinsate by letting off the pedal to equal out the heat transfer.. know what i mean?

as the plate's temp rises, you need to lower the amperage of the torch.. make since?

thanks guys...welp here was day two. i laid down welds liek this all day so i just brought a couple home. those btw are not practice beads we are welding on .050 stainless steel plates we weld the mtogether right now and after that we shear it so we just keep using the 2 plates till there is nothing left. basiclly shearing the weld from the plates. here they are no cleaned. my instructor tells me just work on a steady bead otherwise my pentration is great...the silver colored weld is the bottem of one of the plates (the penetration) thanks again guys. keep'em coming. ill continue to post some welds everyday, next i believe is stainless steel t-joints. ill end up doing t-joints, butt joints, tube to tube, tube to plate with aluminum, SS, titanium

from the last pictures you posted, you are doing great! and im sure you know this, but you got too hot/slow near the end of the weld...

watch the puddle.. if it is starting to get a lil fat on ya, and you are moving at the same pace, let off the pedal a bit..
otherwise, just pick up your travel speed!

it might not be as smooth.. but the weld will do its job..

are you using 1/16" wire?

a general rule of thumb with tig welding would be take 2 wires stick em side by side, and the width of the 2 wires is how big your bead should be..

if you were doing it right, the bead wouldnt be concave looking..

too much heat, and not enough filler.. keep practicing though! the welds are lookin good!

very consistant! which is a good thing!

Near the end of the weld it looks like you are carrying a little contamination into the puddle with your filler rod. Make sure you keep the tip as close to the puddle as you can so you keep it in the gas coverage zone. Might want to back off on the heat a little or speed up your travel.

You might want to try just leaving the rod in the puddle at all times on stainless. It makes it so much easier.

thanks guys....i forgot to bring home my last t-joints. instead of doing 1 dip with the filler i dipped twice. the weld in general had no contamination at either ends but the bead wasnt as consistant but still good. passed those. we just jumped into tube to plate. wow did it hand me my ***. tomorrow will be my 2nd day so ill bring some home and show you pictures. im doing it while standing up and its vertical. its like a 360 butt joint and i cant touch the peice of jig...just my body and arm. basiclly am starting and stopping. ;p

are you using a high frequency 2 step?

if so.. ease into the heat, and wait for the puddle to get to the size you want it.. if it starts to get too hot, back off the pedal..

On those pipe to plate pictures I think your tungsten is too far away from the material. Thats what I found the trick to be welding tube/pipe to plate, while you are moving around the base you need to twist your wrist so that the tungsten maintains the same distance fromthe work as when you started, the further your tungsten is away from the work the wider arc/bead you are gonna get like that. Those welds are really ugly, but your t joint and lap ones are not bad, so keep up the good work and you will get it. Just practise practise.
