Default Rotten eggs and unburnt fuel.

Well sometimes after driving my 03 EP3 I smell unburnt fuel and the distinct scent of rotten eggs. Now I know that points to a faulty cat. My only question is would a CEL light come on, or would it only come on after it has heated up the 02 sensors soooooo much that it broke them?

Also whats the warranty from honda on the emission parts? I only have 26k miles on the car. I have no more warranty for the rest of the car.

Sorry to say it, but there is a 3 year B2B warranty on the car. BUT, the only thing my manual says, is that the only things covered PAST the 3/36 warranty the cars come with, is the ECU and Cat Converter. Each are covered up to 8 years or 80,000 miles. So take it to Honda and see what they tell you.

Check your timing too. When my timing belt snapped in the Eclipse, it is wat cause my cat to go out, because it was running rich and out of time.

So check that while you can. Just to be safe. Are you not getting any DTC's?

Im not getting anything that would point to a problem other than the smell, and probably just in my head, but slightly worse performance out of the car.

I would seriously take it to Honda and have them fix it. According to my owners manual, all Honda's are covered for 8/80 on the cat converters and ECU's. So have them look at it before shelling out any money.

Does the smell come & go depending on how you drove? Does gas from different stations give more or less of the smell?

It comes and goes depending on how I drive but the smell is the same no matter what gas it is.

the smell is coming from a clogged cat. IE the cat gets hotter and performance is lost. raw fuel is being dumped into you exhaust. Raw fuel burns up cats. find out why your car is running rich and you'll find the origin of the problem. could be a leaky injector, restricted air flow, misfire, etc. find that and you'll probably need to replace your cat.

Drive harder and unclog the cat -- it'll be like sneezing.

But yeah, I'd take it to Honda, too.

EP3s have chains? Do all k-series have chains? Do they ever have to be replaced, like a timing belt?

you can't unclog a cat. it doesn't clog, in 3WC the platinum gets burnt off and carbon and deposits take its place. you cant clean out a clogged cat. it needs to be replaced if you want to do it right.

What the hell do you mean it doesn't clog? They do clog. Have you ever seen the inside of one? Im really not trying to be rude by any means, but you ARE incorrect.

Obviously me and barracks were J/K about unclogging it also.

AFAIK, all the K-series motors have timing chains.

they clog up with unburnt fuel and/or lead. the platinum element gets burnt up. so even if you did "unclog" your cat you wouldn't be fixing anything. you still wouldn't bring back the platinum element. because it would have already been burnt up.

Exactly they DO clog, and I assume you read my old message about joking about unclogging it. I know that.

Wait, wait, wait.

You said it cannot GET clogged. But yet, you said that "you cant clean a clogged cat. it has to be replaced to do it right" Am I missing something?

what i meant was that if a cat is restricted by a burnt element it's not repairable. if the element is burnt off the cat is no good. a "clogged cat" = burnt platinum element. therefore you must replace the cat if you wanted to do it correctly.
