Default valve cover ground not bolted...wat went wrong?

today i was at my friends house workin on his 88 Civic. We just got a 90 d16a6 into his car and got everything wired up. When we turned the car over it started perfectly. Then he decided to paint the valve cover. Well he forgot to put the valve cover ground back on when he went to start it. The car wouldnt start. Is the valve cover ground the reason for the car not starting? and if so what couldve went wrong?

Um, put it back on! If it's still off, then there's you're reason!

we put it back on but the car still wont start. Could it be because maybe his battery is dead now?

ok thats all i needed to know was if the ground would cause that. We think its the battery because theres no c.e.l or anything but it wont crank. So we are goin to charge the battery tonight and see what happens after that. I just wanted to make sure we couldnt have blown any fuses or anything
