I was wondering what kind of oil i should put in my 1998 integra with 95k mileage on it. THis will be my first oil change and i dont know what i previous owner put in it. I doubt he really punched the integra hard. But i do every so often. What kind of oil should i put in it? high mileage, synthetic or what? And what kind of brand stands the best mobil 1, castrol, ?? People with similar mileage please reply with some comments. Thanks.

Hey i'm at about 118k and the next oil change sticker on my car reads at about 128k. I just bought the car (95 integra) and was also wondering what type of oil I should use. I know mobil1 is the best, but do I use the same 5w30? or 10w30? I don't know what the numbers mean but I'd like to know what oil to use as well. Thanks guys.

 

^ur gonna wanna change that at around 121k-123k and yes 5w-30 like the guy that posted above u stated.

I doubt that. When the oil change places put a sticker on your car, they usually show the mileage as 3K miles more than you have at the time of the change, and the date as 3 months later. You can change it at whatever intervals you want, though. (Your owner's manual recommends every 7500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, for normal conditions, or every 3750 or 6, for severe conditions.)

The owner's manual says that 5W30 is preferred at ALL temperatures, but you can also use 10W30 when the outside temperatures are above 20 degrees F.

Have you ever looked in your owner's manual? It has useful information inside. If you don't have one, you can buy one here.

The numbers are the viscosity of the oil. The higher the number, the thicker the oil. Oil with two numbers (such as 5W30) is called "multi-viscosity" oil; it flows like a 5 weight at cold temperatures, and like a 30 weight when it heats up to the engine's operating temperature.

 

Oh, to answer the question - I use synthetic 5W30 in both DC2's (the 140K-mile '94 GS-R and the 45K-mile '01 Type R). I was using Mobil 1 but lately I've been using Pennzoil Platinum, which is a lot cheaper ($3.97/quart at Wal-Mart, plus you can get a $15 rebate back on the purchase of six).

I have 153k on my motor with no leaks.

 

Castrol 10w40 full Synthetic.
your motor has almost 100k you should start using 10w40.


10w30 is ok.


my friend runs his car on willowsprings/buttonwillow track and he has done a lot of oil tests on his car and says Castrol full synthetic is the best oil for street use because it doesnt turn brown fast.

00 GS-R w/ 75k.

 

i live in california, so i should be looking at 10W40? it is always at least 20 degrees fairenheit outside. Mobil 1 or castro?

I also use this brand. Can't go wrong with Mobil1.

 

used castrol on my first change, and recently got mobil one high performance syn 10w30...going to change it a couple more times with mobil 1 then maybe going up to purple royal.

 

what do you turboed guys use for oil? I use Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic but it seems to burn too fast??

MY car (and motor) has 235K and I use 5w30 Valvoline MaxLife year round for the past 120K miles. No leaks whatsoever. I lose MAYBE 1/2 quart over the course of 3000 miles. And yes I do still push it a bit on occasion (redline shifts and such).

X2, except mine only has 110k.

I do have an oil leak from the cam seal plug, but it is very minor.

 

Find out what the previous owner used. If the engine has only used dino oil for its whole 95k life, then i would stick with that. If you use synthetic and the engine has always used dino, then leaks might appear.

 

Previous owner always used Castrol dino oil up until I bought it at 89K miles. I started using Mobil1 Synthetic 5w30 for the next year or so, 20K miles, with no problems. No leaks ever appeared. But it became too expensive and I couldn't get it as cheaply as I used to (Mobil1 for $3.95/qt. at Wal-Mart in Nashville back in '01/'02 ), so I switched to the MaxLife 5w30, been on that ever since for the past 125K miles.

No. Absolutely not.

Here's what the Mobil 1 website says about that bunk:

Myth: Mobil 1 will leak out of the seals of older cars.

Reality: Mobil 1 does not cause leaks. In fact, new Mobil 1 was tested in dozens of industry standard and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) tests to prove its seal performance. It is fully compatible with the elastomeric materials from which all automotive seals and gaskets are made. If an older engine is in good condition and does not have oil leaks, Mobil 1 provides the same advantages as when used in a new engine. ExxonMobil recommends taking measures to repair the leaks, then using Mobil 1. ExxonMobil also recommends following the automobile manufacturer's manual for the proper oil to use.

10W30 if you want. Not 10W40 though.

 

Yes but the problem with some older engines is that the switch to synthetic may clear up sludge that was actualy masking a leak in the motor. So yes technically synthetic is not the cause of the leak, but it brings the leak to the surface whereas continued use of dino oil wouldnt do this.

 

IMHO use 10w30 only if you burn a little using 5w30. If you don't burn any with 5w then use that all the time. I don't see any other reason to be using 10w

It's perfectly safe to switch from conventional oil to synthetic.

Sort of true, sort of not, IMHO. If synthetic clears up the sludge, then conventional oil will probably clear it up too. Like the Mobil website says, if your engine has a leak, you should get it fixed.
