Default Why are 17s bad?

I was reading the faq and I came upon the point where it states 17s should not be on anything but accords, s2000s or nsxs (or something along those lines). I have a 98 civic sedan and I've seen some same generation civics that look really good rolling on 17s. Why is it bad to have them? And if people think they aren't bad, what's good about 17s?

Please don't flame me, I don't know very much at all but I'm looking to learn.

More unsprung weight, plus a it has more inertia so its harder to stop and get rolling. Not a good thing on a little 4 cyl.

17's aren't bad, it's all on personal preference. If you wanna roll on 18's on a civic, then do it, its your car. 17's may weigh more then a 15/16" rim, but if your car is fast, then its fast.

remember.....its your car, not other peoples'

I actually kind of prefer 17s with 205/40/17 on a Civic/ Integra. The downsides of course, are a harsher ride, more unsprung suspension weight, and you will break a rimk if you hit a big enough pothole.

No.
The 05+ RSX-S as well as the DC5R both come stock w/ 17s.

big rims look ridiculous mainly on cars like hatchbacks and del sols. on a civic sedan, i think 17's would fit nicely

Exactly, spend some time looking in the appearance forum and just look for what you like. Go on the civic sedan thread and look for your generation civic. There's a lot of people riding on 17s. They don't look bad in a 4 door but keep in mind you must be dropped at least 2-2.5" for them to look good.

I know it's a lot of pages but it's worth it

So...

negative:
more unsprung weight
harsher ride due to lower profile tires
if it is going to look good, it has to be dropped at least 2 inches and then stiffened more, meaning an even harsher ride
big pothole risk
harder to start and stop
AND
overall more expensive than its smaller brethren. (thanks nsxtasy )

positive:
looks good when the car is lowered enough

A good recap?

Right now, 17s do not seem like they are worth the money or the headache. What would be a good size, combining both comfort (as this is a DD that makes a 450 mile trip four times a month) and good looks? And my car will only be dropped 1.75 at the max.

And driven in the Berkeley area, so major potholeage.

Thank you all for your help, this would be a lot easier if I wasn't such a noob...

You left out the fact that 17" tires are a lot more expensive than smaller ones.

On a '98 Civic, I think you would do just fine with 15x6 wheels (with either 195/55-15 or 205/50-15 tires) or with 16x7 wheels (with either 205/45-16 or 215/45-16 tires).

imo it depends what you want looks or (faster response)speed, and what type of rims, (cheap @$$ aluminum foil chrome rims no matter what size) the way they're car looks... i prefer a staggered look on my cars 15" front 16" rear on my crx. 16" and 17" rear for my integ.. some people dont like it but i like the more aggressive look of the rear... i just didn't like 17's on the front, it felt slow, but it's all preference.... i liked the way it cornered though with all four on..

Staggering wheel sizes on a FWD car definitely won't help you turn better and will increase understeer.

In addition to degrading your performance, they also prevent you from rotating your tires to even out the wear.

17's are too big on a civic. I would much rather som 15's or 16's with some meat on them.

Wait just a second. You stagger wheel sizes on a FWD car (and in another thread run premium in your LS) and we're the morons? I'm not gonna even start to explain basic principles of mechanics since you seem unwilling to accept any helpful advice. I'll put it simply: physics> j00.

Ok, after finishing the sedan thread from fast95eg8 (which took about two weeks!), I am really liking how 16x7s look. Now, I'm kind of on a budget, but I can save for something relatively good. I am a major noob about wheel companies though, but here's what I'm looking for and maybe people can point me in the right company directions.

Most important is strength. These wheels need to last a long time because I will not be able or willing to buy more than one set for a long time.

Second, I would like them to be relatively cheap. I can't afford anything like Volks (though it's nice to dream) but I'm not looking for $70 rims that will break in two months.

Third, it would be nice if I wasn't tied to four boat anchors. Relatively light would be great even though I know really light wheels are very expensive.

Those three in that order by importance are what I'm looking for from a wheel company, so if anybody has any suggestions please let me know.

Rotas?
Enkeis?
Axis?
Motegi?
Konig?
Anything?
