Milage ...how much is too much ?
I am just getting into bikes. Im looking to get a 600 to learn on (i know many will say thats kind of powerful to learn on). Anyway I wanted to know what milage should i generally try to stay under when purchasing a bike ?

If the bike looks like poop, the engine is most likely not maintained well. If the owner cared enough for its outward appearances, it is highly possible that he/she took care of the insides, too.
I got my bike with 4K. I remember people saying thats high for a bike... LOL.
I wouldn't have done it any other way. I think everyone's first bike should be a used bike, if they're not Richie-rich that is...

rule of thumb is to multiply bike mileage by 8 to get an equivalent car mileage.
also, it depends on the bike. i wouldn't worry about a honda with 20,000 miles. a harley w/ 20000's probably gonna be a POS though

you can find a mint condition 17k bike or a shitty conditioned 3k bike. It really depends on how the owner treated it. Just check out the chain, forks, frame, wheels, plastics (if any), lines, sprockets, etc. for a particular bike. usually the higher-mileage bikes is just an excuse for a seller to sell for less or a buyer to offer less. I would personally like to get the lowest mileage, best conditioned bike, but who wouldn't
and like i've said in previous threads (that i heard somewhere and makes complete sense to me): the reason why you don't see many high-mileage sport bikes is because people wreck them and because their value is not that high (relative to cars and the parts required to fix them) they are totalled, parted out, etc. Maintain a motorcycle well and it'll last you forever - much like a car.

Where did you get that? We have a buddy who is a bike mechanic, went to MMI, and says that the newer model jap engines last forever. 100k+ no problem, if maintained properly.
it all depends on the rider i have seen bikes that wasn't properly taken care of and broke down after 20k mi then you have guys like my friend that takes care of his bike like it was his kid.He has a 01 yzf 600r with 59k miles on it, its his only transportation, and he will track it now and then. The bike doesn't smoke, tick, skip, or anything it still pulls strong like new.
Lol from the sounds of it my bike 8k in 3 monthes 06 gsxr isn't worth **** any more. But i have had followed the manual precisely on all services. I really don't think you can tell by looking at a bike how well its been maintained. Thats why i went new with a warranty
Its mostly about condition of the bike not mileage. These motors will last a long time, but like someone said previously they get totaled and wrecked and people part them out.
