bad gas? I think not
Well, my bike is still down to what i thought was bad gas...My bike wouldnt idle and it sounds like a v-twin. I've been pricing around bike shops to clean my carbs and found nothing cheaper $300. So i decided to do a little homework on carb cleaning myself and after reading bike forums vigorously i found a little trick. Called water and header.... basically to make sure that all cylenders are firing i sprayed my header with water and started the bike up on 100% choke and what did i see. Cyl # 1,2 and 3, dried up in a sec.... cyl #4 stayed wet.... meaning it wasnt even firing. SO i've descovered my problem now with all your help... how do i fix it? Where should I start?
8/28/06 checked the 4th spark plug wire for spark. It shocked the hell out of me so obviously i have spark. I bought a brand new spark plug and installed it, still nothing changed. What should i do?

you can pull the spark wire out of the bad cylinder and put it close to something metal like the block on the engine. if you see a spark jump then it has spark, if not, no spark. i dont know the safest place to check for spark jump so maybe just make sure you dont have fuel spilt on whatever you are testing it on.

ehh just hold the wire and if you get electrocuted a little bit its all good

It's most likely a fouled spark plug. I had the same problem in the Spring. I thought it was something else because I had just changed the spark plugs in the Fall. Put in some new plugs and she fired right up.
i'll check the plug tomorrow... lets hope its just a spark plug.... I havent rode her for like a month.... i miss it so bad.... everytime someone flyes by me when i'm in a car i get depressed cuz i wanna ride too.

perhaps the top of the spark plug?
perhaps the top of the spark plug?
hahaha water/header... well whatever works... I would not have thought that a twin sounds four cylinder was from bad gas, your coil may have gone bad on that bank of cylinders or even the plug wire/boot assembly itself is bad
I don't know if its a bad boot ...I mean it looks fine, just like the other 3. I don't hear it ticking like a faulty plug wire would. It probably just needs good old carb cleaning. What do rest of you think?
if you do a plug check after running you should be able to tell if gas is getting into the cylinders, if there is fuel it can only be one other thing... fire
i did check the plug, after 3 mins of running, it looked fine. It's a brand new plug that i installed today. There is nothing on it, its not white its not black, its not oily, it looks brand new just like it did when I got it out of the package. What should i look for on that plug?
for a non firing cylinder... wetness and the smell of fuel. if nothing is there, then you have a fuel flow issue. remove teh carb and see if the bowl on four has fuel in it(there maybe a drain plug for that bowl) if there is not then check all lines and make sure there are no flow issues there. in addition make sure the diaphram connected to teh slide on four(might as well check all of them) is not cracked and leaking... IF you have cv type carbs
i ran the bike again, then immediately pulled the spark plug.... it was not even hot... it didnt smell like gas but it was kinda moist! not with gas tho... felt more like warm water... weird!
its a '01 yamaha yzf600r 599cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, inline 4-cylinder 16-valve. So if the spark plug is wet with water what does that mean.... i mean its not getting any fuel in there thats for sure cuz i would have smelled it.
I am honestly starting to give up, i made an appointment at a cycle shop for first week of sept to get my bike looked at and they said according to my description they need to clean the carbs to fix it. They are charging me 200 for everything so i guess its not bad. Thanks for all replies guys.
