Runs best fully retarded.
Hello,
I did search and I found this: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1580342
My engine (B18b1) runs best with the dizzy retarded all the way. By saying runs best I mean it has the best throttle response and is liveliest.
Code I'm getting is for the ELD, and IACV.
From what I read in the thread it looks like the belt is off, but I think it runs too nice for the belt to be off, even by a tooth no?
With the dizzy set to the middle the engine is more sluggish. I don't have a timing gun..
Thanks.

Thanks. It still seems to be running too rich after getting the MAP sensor straightened out (nore more 03 code). What else can be making it run rich...
I probably have some minor vacuum leaks (didn't get to that yet after buying the car) but it seems it would only make it better allowing more air in.
It has straight pipe with stock muffler

Well, it was fully retarded when I bought the car, guy at a meet noticed that and told me it should be centered, so I moved it to center but it ran worse.

That would be the way of adjusting your timing without a timing light....

****, I thought the picture in the repair manual was from the back of the motor, not from the front. So yes, it's fully advanced, sorry about that.
So the CEL's or timing belt..

like omg, that was so smooth. *cough* ..
But seriously, towards the front of the car is retarded then?

mines like that. just the intake cam on my b18a is off one tooth (pointed towards the front of the car). i run my dizzy fully retarded and with the timing gun the timing marks just barely line up. from the plugs i can tell im running lean, but not to the point of pinging. oh and im not throwing any codes.

I had the same issue as you in my DA. I changed out cams and didn't time it correctly. My timing belt was off a tooth and when it was fully advanced it ran better. It was slower than hell compared to being right though. Check your timing.
Good Luck

You are going to have to take the valve cover off to readjust the timing belt regardless.

Allright, I'll buy a new timing belt and VC gasket and give it a try, would be good to also adjust the valves while I'm in there.
Thanks for the help!

You don't necessarily need a new timing belt unless the one on there is ready to be replaced. You just need to readjust its timing. Same with the VC gasket...you don't need to replace it unless it needs to be replaced because it is cracked or falling apart.
That would be a perfect time to adjust valve lash.

Timing belt doesn't look too fresh, and is the VC gasket take the pain of removal? It doesn't leak but what I'm used to seeing is rubber rock hard solid on older cars. Who knows. I'll see once I get there.

Towards the front is retarded, towards the firewall is advanced. Easy way to remember is the 2 r's, right to retard.

dammit, just buy a timing light and finally do it the right way poser.

Poser? What's that supposed to mean.

Damnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!
Punch him in the head!!!
I wouldn't take that ****! That's what you get for asking stupid questions. J/K
I forgot how to do timing. I learned during auto class, but I forgot , due to the pot.

The crank pulley has a white mark about an inch to the right of the 3 timing marks. When setting the cams, the crank pulley white mark must be in line with the lower cover pointer. Then the cams can be set into their perfect alignment.
Once the cams and crank are in perfect alignment, and you manage to tighten the belt without throwing them off again, the ignition timing can be set. 18* BTDC usually results in optimal performance. Timing lights are around $30 and definitely worth every penny.
Their are many write-ups on how to set the cams and tension the timing belt, so search up. Good luck. Once you have everything set right, you will feel the performance difference.
