looking to try my hand at some local SCCA action. Is it worth going to a SCCA event? Or should I look into HPDE instead?

I autocross at the SCCA Sacramento events held at the San Joaquin Fairgrounds. Try it. I believe due to the size of turnout at the San Francisco region, you need to be an SCCA member to run. Sacramento events is just slightly higher fee to run as a non-member.

what exactly are you looking for? the sfr autox are fun... u should come out.. of course you need to be a member...

HPDE is fun too.... i believe u get more bang for buck with an HPDE

you cant go wrong with both

having done both, i personally would rather save my autox entry fees and go to a track day. its simply more bang for the buck. you dont have to work, and only takes up one whole day, not 6-8 days of autoxing for only 6 minutes of total course time, as opposed to at least an hour or more of track time.

but whatever floats your boat. you should definately try autox a few times. SFR solo2 is extremely organized and well run, and one of the most competitive regions. you just need a scca membership first for their events.

Just come out and give it a try. I recently moved to the area and ran the 2 SFR events they had in July. I didn't know that you have to be an SCCA member to run with SFR however. I'm away on business now, but when I come back next month I plan to try out the Sacramento region events, too. (usually I autox a white ITR #81 in DStock)

I'd join you guys at 9/10 but I'm going to be out of the country.
Anyway, I'd say HPDE is a better motorsports activity but I think you should autox a few times first just to learn car control at the limit. You can't really learn high-speed car control at the limit - and you shouldn't be getting loose at 90mph anyway - but in the tight stuff it's nice to be comfortable with the car if you overcook it somewhere, which is autox skill.

If you want to come out to Thunderhill, there's still space 11/17 in the Miata club I drive with. http://www.team-racing.org. There's still space this Friday too I believe, but that's kind of short notice...

I'm an SCCA member, I havent been to a SFR event in a while though.

Well since I'm still a trial user and cant post anymore today I'll just edit it.

Right now I have my CL, but when I did go to the autox events we (my dad and I) used his first gen 280Z 2+2. Its been like a year though since Ive been to an event :/

vietnameeh, you drive the FSP car in your sig? Not sure if you're asking in general, but I'll be driving the same white itr in DS #81 I ran at the last two SFR events I did (7/23 and 7/9). Doubt I'll stick around till the end on the 10th. Maybe i'll see you at the next one. Anyone know how far Thunderhill is from the San Jose area?

It's one hour north of Sacramento, so it should be almost 3 hours from San Jose. For Mapquest purposes, it's right outside of Willows, CA.
