cams
I was reading up on truehonda and I noticed they had stage one cams. Has anyone had any experience with putting cams in their D17 or would it be any point of doing so?
"gearbox" from 7thgencivic.com did it, his car would idle bad and stall a lot, he said he felt some decent gains but it wasn't worth the bad idling and having his car stall. the car was sitting around for like a week before he decided to remove everything and keep his engine stock.
ask him for more info or search that site.

gearbox never did the cams. he did some headwork which ended up cause some problems because they milled the head down too much. the stg one cams may give you like 5-7hp with a full tune. but your going to spend about $2k at least to do that. and teh stg 2 cams are worthless unless you plan to do EMS and raise the rev limiter. guys are making about 125whp with a vafcII tuned with stg2 cams. and with a 75 shot making about 180whp.
eh, $600 if you can do it yourself and not tune them... I don't know how much money you're making but if you have a lot of money and a lot of love for the D17... then do it!
Otherwise, don't waste your time or money.

all your accounting for is the cam and springs/retainers. that alone is $600. then youll need fluids, gaskets. then you need a way to tune the car because the new cam will not run right with the stock tune. idle adjustments and fuel and igintion maps will need to be changed. so now we are talking some sort of tunning product. we will keep it simple and not even get the power you could with full control and say use a vafcII. that is another $300. then you talking about dyno time and tune. and that is all if you can do the install yourself. if you cant your looking at another $300 easy very easy for install. then also to take full advantage of the cams you need cam gears. that is more money. then youll realize that with the vafcII the car still runs like crap and youll spend more on emanage or ems and we really dont want to even go there.. so no my cost list isnt off. and all this for minimal gains. you tell me is it worth it???
Ill give u an idea of what it cost's to put in cams, as i did it on my old car.
cams = 200
valve springs and retainers = 200
installing of valve springs/retainers+ milling of head = 200
new HG+new cam seals+arp headbolts = 150
oil=30
timing belt=50
cam gears= 100
I dropped the head onto the car, and bolted it up, probably another 200-300 if u get a shop to do it
and THEN u need to tune it correctly. a VAFCII ( which is the bottem of the barrel for tuning) is another 200ish, and then paying a shop to tune can be another 50-100 per/hour
not worth it.

ok and for a d17 every priced you listed is way off. you also forgot coolant, new intake manifold gasket, exhaust mani gasket, and the vafcII is the worst way to try an tune the d17 with cams. and you still didnt include any dyno time. you cant just install a vafcII and everything is fine. emanage is the better option but still doesnt allow you to raise the rev limiter to take advantage of the cam. the d17 is the bastard stepchild. that is all there is too it. everything is more expensive and gains arent worth the trouble. if you dont believe me go fishing, i have now for years. this was my original plan. but for the money it just isnt worth the gain. why spend all that money to get 30-50hp. spend the same amount on boost and yeild 200whp 100hp over stock.
