Need help on identifying USDM 97 ITR specs
Hey guys,
Im in the process of purchasing a 97 USDM ITR out of state and are trying to "clarify" the parts (i.e Original motor, tranny, etc) on the car. I found myself a bit lost, comparing some of the items to the 98-above U.S ITR's.
Im crossed reference to 98 ITR's ( AS I currently own 2 of them) and have never owned a 97 ITR. If you asking why
My first question is..
1.) Do Original 97 ITR Tranny have the factory "J4D LSD" stamping on them?
2.) Is the tranny supposed to carry the factory green vin plate, found on 98 and above ITR's?
3.) Do 97 ITR's have a PR3-1 head stamping, versus PR3-3/4 on 98 and above R's.
4.) If they dont have the Factory green vin plate on the trannys, what number should be on the sticker found on pre-98 trannys.
Thanks for any help you can provide, This will definitely complete my book of knowledge on 97-01 ITR's

1. Yes they do.
2. Yes it should.
3. Mine is stamped PR3-2.
4. Not sure, I replaced my transmission with an OEM USDM ITR transmission new from Baranco, it is stickerd as S80.

Are you certain? Cause I know 94-97 cars didnt carry the vin tag. However, the 97 R was released late 98. Which questions if they should have the green vin plate riveted on the trans.
Any other 97 Type R owners that can help clarify this?
Thanks for all your help

i always thought s80 was a b16 designation for the tranny(without the lsd). i think even the jdm 96 specs had the j4d lsd stamping. hmmm...or was it S1. looks like i'll learn from this thread.

Here are some pics of the engine bay that the owner sent me.
You can see that there is no vin tag. Can anyone else point anything else they see that a bit odd?
Also, can someone confirm the "<FONT SIZE="3">PR3-1</FONT>" Head stamping, and if this is true and correct for 97 U.S R's?
Thanks

Also, It looks as if the wiring was tampered with? look at the driver side wiring by the Engine mount.

O.K. I just went outside the parking lot trying to get you the info. As soon as I popped the hood, three guys surounded my car peeping into the engine bay.
Anyway, my R is a 97 and here is the info I gathered:
*Transmission---It has the green tag which contains the serial number.
*LSD---It has the "LSD" stamped on it.
*The head---Number inside the four circles from left to right = 9\7 /1 1\0 0/6
to the right, it says PR3-2.
My motor is all original. Not thing has been removed or replaced. Hope this help.

1) Tranny is stamped LSD
2) Yes.
3) Head stamping can be any PR3-(1-4). That is purely the casting number and is only determined by which head casting it was made from, not which vehicle year/model. The important thing is the date the stamp located in the circles.
4) The VIN plate has been on USDM Trannies since the early 90's. My '92 GSR had a VIN plate on the tranny. If there is no VIN plate, look to see where the VIN plate would be. There are two holes where the VIN plate should be attached, these are made during casting, and if they look clean, it is a JDM tranny, if the holes look like something has been screwed in them before, then odds are the VIN plate was pulled out.
