Porsche 944 or Mazda Miata for track whore...hmmmm
I'm thinking about getting either a 944 (non-turbo) or early model Miata just for the track (theyre both around the same price, give or take). Any suggestions which one you would take stock for stock (or close to stock)??? It would be used only for a road racing/autox hoar...

Miata. I don't think you want to even think about what Maintenance costs will be like on the Porsche.

actually, I would get the 944 only so I can have a bumper sticker on my teg that says "My other car is a Porsche"...
yea, I'm leaning towards Miata

screw that I have a porsche and I never talk about it. parts for porsche's (even the cheaper models) are still really expensive

well maybe if you had that in your signature instead of that rock crawler, members of HT would think you were rich, and not some imbred hick who drives a mud slinger

Years and years ago, my Dad owned a 924. Sime punk *** kid decided to break the back window. At that point in time, it was the most expensive piece of glass out of all cars. It was upwards of $3000! lol Keep in mind that was 20+ years ago. I vote Miata.
I'm 6'3" and don't fit in the <2006 miata, well not the way I'd like to.
Perhaps with some seat mods I wouldn't have to look straight at the sun visor?!
Wearing a helmet with the roof up?! HA. fuggedaboutit.
I drive a stock 1986 944 turbo. Yes, parts are pricey.

i've never driven a 944 before so my opinion is slightly biased. i own a miata (never have tracked it...yet) and i have to say it's an awesome car. read about it all you want on miata.net...it's a totally reliable car and has very balanced handling traits.
* beware however, of the early NA models as they are notorious for crankshaft problems. go for the 1.6 if your looking for a cheap deal...and 1.8 if you're looking for the better deal (increased torque/power, larger brakes, slightly improved rigidity, etc.).
however, be on the look out for deals on the hardtop as they are pretty rare to come by since the inception of the spec miata series.
i got mine with the hardtop for a pretty good deal and am very happy with the car. and be sure to get one with the the torsen LSD!
happy motoring!

944, hands down. WAY cheaper to get into a competitive car.
Buy a track prepped one, competitive race winner, for $6K-10K in the 944 Spec or 944 Cup classes (depending on what your region has).

Sorry, I didn't read ALL that closely. Buy a track-only car and a trailer
if you ever decide to race, you're pretty much ready. Plus, they're cheaper.
You might be able to make a race car emissions legal for wherever you are, so you could drive to nearby events.

i bought a 94 miata about 2 months ago. it's a fantastic car, and gets better gas mileage than my truck. so i drive it often, and find that it can even make rush-hour fun.. solid as a rock, and handles well even though the shocks are blown!
I would look seriously at the used market for BOTH as completed track cars. My educated GUESS is you'll find a nicer used, rich-boy 944 for the same cost as a mid-level Miata. I think more guys build Miatas for hard, competitive racing than 944s. I think more 944s are built for existing P. owners who want to try racing. A lot of those cars are professionally built by P. mechanics for their existing customers. Not the case for Miatas. They are more often home-built. Plus, when those guys sell a 944 its not because their broke and need to sell the car. More likely its because they used it for a few years of license and rookie stuff and now want to get a Cup car. The 944 is in the way.
I would be open minded and LOOK for the best individual deal rather than decide based on reputation or opinion.
Besides, both of those cars regularly get stomped by front-running H4 and ITA cars, so it doen't really matter
