Inconsistent oil height. (dipstick)
I've had happen to me twice now. When I change my oil, I put in around 4 qts, and then add little by little to come to the right height on the dipstick. But after a few days of driving, and letting my car sit for a few hours (E.g. drive at night, check oil in the morning) I find that the oil is particularly high on the dipstick, and this worries me. Can someone please clarify as to why this could be happening?
If you let the car sit all the oil in the motor from the head to the block drip down to the oil pan so it is normal. Start the car and let it warm up first then check it again to see if it on the top dot.
Of course I'd have to wait a while before checking it again, to let the oil pressure lower back to normal right? Cuz my brother just checked my oil, and he said it was perfect. Baffled the hell out of both of us. (note that I moved my car a few hours ago, so the engine was running for a while)
yea it has a lot to do with how long it's been since the motor was running. 15 minutes is enough to correctly check level. i make sure the oil is at the top hole on the dipstick when cold.
to OP: when you pour the oil in it also takes few minutes to drain down completely, which is why it's higher later. you are filling to the upper hole not thinking about the oil still draining out of the head.
