keyway on crankshaft is rounding out
I had my car in the shop for a while to get some stuff worked on, and they noticed that the keyway on the crankshaft was rounding out a little, and the key itself is shaped like a diamond now instead of a rectangle. The thing is, I just had the crank pulley and the key replaced no more then a thousand miles ago and its already bad? Does anyone know if you can fix the keyway on the crank? or do i have to get a whole new crankshaft?
I had this happen on a JRSC GSR -- it needed a new crank so I ended up buying a cheap used short block. I have heard of people drilling and pinning the pulley but I opted not to do it that way. I had thought the JRSC's extra load on the crank pulley caused it until I heard my ex gf also had the same problem on her Civic, and both our cars have between 165K and 192K miles on them. It may be a problem of a worn pulley that allows it to wobble on the crank and eat the key and groove. I bought a used low mileage crank pulley with a new key, and the short block had only 80K miles on it and all has been well for the last 8K miles, with the JRSC back on it too...
I hope you can get it fixed for cheap, if at all.
