Default Tinted Shields at Night and Lack of Eye Protection

So I was out later than I expected last night and ended up having to ride home with my Suomy that has a mirror smoke shield on it. I like it a lot during the day but I just cannot see dick once it gets dark. If I'm riding at dusk or night I'll use my HJC with clear shield but I just didn't expect to be riding at night last night.

I ran the shield down for as long as I could which was basically until I couldn't even see the lane markers more than 15 feet in front of me. I ran it half open the last few miles and was fine most of the way. About a mile from my house a rock or bug or god knows what flew right into my eye. It didn't appear that anything was in my eye when I got home but a day later it still feels like there's something in there. I'm fairly certain I scratched my cornea as I did that when I was younger and it felt exactly like this. I've been considering keeping a pair of yellow or clear glasses under my seat in case I get caught out like last night. I hadn't done it yet because obviously I needed to pay the price first before I did anything.

All this is really just a long-winded way of me asking what those with tinted shields do at night. Do you run it down? You run it up and take your chances? You run it up with eye protection? Is there some specialty item I should consider or is buying a $10 pair of yellow/clear sunglasses the answer? What do half helmet guys do at night, wear these?

Bonus story: I saw a guy smoking a cigarette on his Gold Wing this morning. He totally had ashes fly in his face. It mad me laugh.

The clear glasses in the tail is a good idea, I forgot to bring my clear shield at the sushi night and it was a little bit of a nervous ride home although I could still see. Where are those clear glasses from?

At the soochi meet the other night i had the same problem. I ran it down when i got to speeds where the wind was causing my eyes to water, and would put it up at slower speeds.

I got both those pics from ebay. If you just search for riding glasses there are a shitload of them for just a few bucks. Evidently there is a big market for them (makes sense with Harley riders) and the market is flooded. I have no idea what sort of quality they are but for $4 I guess it's hard to go wrong.

ask edwin, EA64 or whatever, he has a sheild back that is nice.

or a jacket that holds one, mine has a pocket for a sheild that goes around my waist. can not even tell it is there.

Have you considered the iridium visor that comes on the Spec 1-R Extreme? I've had really good experience with it since it gives great protection during the day and as good/ better performance than a clear visor at night. I do have to warn about taking good care while cleaning with water or super mild soap due the anti-fog residue which will desolve with hard scrubbing or strong solvents.

So it seems specific to the Irridium, which is what I have... although maybe the Irridium Mirror Chrome that sucks at night. Oh and I've already learned my session on the scrubing of it wearing off the finish.

Switching sheilds just seems like way too much of a hassle, especially if I have to carry the other one around with me. If that's the case I'd just use my HJC and wear sunglasses during the day like I used to.

There are more than I want to pay but seem like a nice option with 5 different colors and a case. I need to pickup some shooting glasses as well so this will work for both uses.

Group buy (2+) and they're only $20 a set, who's in?

Sorry... they don't offer a Starbucks posing model.

These obviously are for functional use, not as your main pair of sunglasses.

There are actually a ton of different options.

actually... i've never riden w/ yellow tint in either face shield or glasses. For night time would yellow be better than clear? I use a clear face shield on my Shoei.

Anyone else find that yellow is annoying? I have used amber/yellow glasses when I'm shooting but never while riding.

I pretty much have the same problem when I mtn bike. I ride during the week, after work, with a bunch of friends. The problem is, we start off when its nice and sunny but half way thru the ride, it starts to get dark, and towards the end, it's basically night time.

When you mtn bike with a bunch of people, you can be riding in a cloud of dust so you definitely need some eye protection.

I ride with Specialized optics. They're damn expensive but they're made of some indestructible lenses and they automatically turn dark when the sun hits them much like Transitions lenses.

If you were to use them on your motorcycle, you'd probably want to use clear shields and keep them on, day or night. They won't work if the shield is UV protected tho. And they don't get pitch black like some lokes.

Just thought I'd mention Adaptalite stuff. Heard Oakley has lenses like these too.

I don't get tinted/mirrored sheilds anymore for this reason. I just wear my Oakleys as well as the helmet during daytime use and take the sunglasses off around dusk.

I was in the same boat for two years. I finally convinced myself I need the bling since the Suomy came with a free shield. I actually really like the tinted shield, I've just run into the exact problem I was trying to avoid for so long.

Not really... I like the shield I have, I'm just looking for an insurance policy.

with most wrap-around sport glasses i had a hard time with anything above 50 mph where my eyes would water often. Never really hindering my vision, just tearing up with the wind. I also got bits of dirt and dust in the eyes.

i have a mesh jacket that has a pocket for another face sheild so if i know i'll be out between 7pm and sometime later i'll put it in the pocket (although i usually just leave it in there).

I've ridden with a tinted shield at night plenty of times though - never really had that much of an issue unless the streets weren't lit.

I can still wear mine on back roads at night and see decently well (if a squirrel or something ran out in front of me I'd probably be screwed, though). Maybe mine is lighter than yours. I used to switch it every time I was going to ride at night but that turned into too much of a pain and the latches were started to wear out.

Btw no one has mentioned just buying some clear safety glasses @ home depot or wal mart. Or if you want to be fashionable buy some fake eyeglasses that look cool. :-p

usually when i am riding and i think i will be out for a while i will either have a clear or amber shield in my bag. i think if i didnt have these items with me i would keep my shield crakced on either the first or second notch, stay tucked behind the windscreen and just look up through the open area when i need to see something. i think you should carry some amber or yellow lensed sunglasses at minimum. you should always be prepared for these riding situations.

I got tired of breaking shields when trying to change them out, so I gave up and stick to clear ones now.
