Default N00b help....yes i searched..

i just picked up an uber clean 1993 civic hatch, it has the D15b7 in it, and is automatic.

i paid $400 CAD for it,

heres the problem, it has low compression in cylinder #2, my mechanic said its a valve, so i plan on doing the head.

1st) is this a common problem in civics?
2) what may have caused this?
3) is it way easier just to swap for another d15 then to do the head?

I dont want to hear about b16/b18/h22/ any other swap, im using this as my winter beater and just want to drive it, i have a cavalier with way too much money into it lol... (and please no domestic bashing )

...cough....
valves or rings get them both replaced and if you do a swap because one cylinder has bad compression your an idiot

wasnt planin on a swap.

so im gunna do the head then, get it decked and do all the gaskets, and get the valve fixed.

is there anything else i should do to see (other then the leakdown) to confirm that it is the valve?

and i did the whole oil in the cylinder to see if there was a hole in the piston, and there was nothing, also im not gettin no blowby

well whats the point its auto if he goes with a swap to a b18 he is most likely only going to find a manual which either means he swaps it from auto to stick or puts the b18 power plant on his d15s tranny which basically renders it pointless...

Rebuilding the head's almost worthless on that car, you can get a JDM D15 VTEC for like 400 from hmotors.

D15's are just as cheap as the D16's.....I'd swap it...then at least you have an extra parts engine in case **** goes down.

yea, i'd recommend just buying yourself another d15/16 and swapping it because d series are so cheap and common its not worth it to spend money fixing it. go to the marketplace, sometimes youll catch people with engines they have left over from swapping selling them for free or for like 50 bucks.

I got a d15b8 head out of a cx. 8 valve fury right here. But it got around 40 miles per gallon.
40.00 shipped. needs valve seals which shouldn't be hard at all.

Dude 9 times out of of ten when you have low CR due to a valve issue you can redo the head, slap it on that miled-up old block, and then the bottom end starts smoking because you have a freshened up head with a miled-up block.

Okay do me a favor then.

After you swap on a rebuilt head, video tape the engine running after it's warmed up, and then have someone rev it while you take the camera around to the tailpipe.

I'd just like to see the James Bond/Spy hunter smokescreen on video, thanks.

The point of me saying "swap" isn't because I want you to go out and spend a **** ton on a high performance swap - I'm trying to save your time and money of redoing a head only to finsd that the engine smokes after you slap the head on.

How many miles are on this engine you're wanting to do a head rebuld on?

Also you're ASSUMING the CR loss is from a valve, but what if the ring lands on that #2 cylinder are the problem, and not the head?

The D15B7 is a toss away motor for a lot of people. You can probably find en entire good running D15B7 that someone swapped out for a B/K/H swap for less than what you'll pay to have the head milled, pressure tested, valvejob, valve guides, and valestem seals done for at a reputable machine shop.

Just trying to help, that's all.

I agree, its 13 year old car your are bound to have problems. Look into upgrading to another motor if its in your budget. It would be nice to B18B in there...

The risk alone of investing the time and money into rebuilding a head that has NO guarantee's when it's done is SILLY... It's one thing if you had already invested money into the engine and wanted to stick with that engine... OR if you KNEW the history of the car... chances of something else going on that car are pretty good IMO... my car has 215k miles on it and runs like a freaking CHAMP... because I maintain it... it's NEVER EVER had a major issue...

Save money like b18c said and get a dirt cheap swap... I've been offered 2 d16z6's, a prelude b20, and an h23 for FREE over the past few years... and I don't know all that many people...

You can find a used d series block with a guarantee for less than it will prob. cost you to rebuild the head...

And you could prob. find one w/o a guarantee for nothing-300 bucks.

i agree that swapping the motor for another is probably gunna be my best bet in the long run, i found another d15b7 for $100, with 5spd tranny, so im gunna swap that in, then keep the other for a spare, possibly rebuild it, or if the right motor presents itself cheap, then ill do it

If your on that low budget, and have a car to drive around, then I think you should take your whole motor out and clean it, add new head gasket, new intake manifold gasket, get some new piston rings, and put everything back together.

Agreed. Swap in another motor but if it is jacked you wasted time which is > than money for 100.00.
I have wasted 1 bill on worse things than a whole motor. But then again I don't consider somethings a waste.

Plus I have bought cars for 100.00 as well LOL. I have had as many as 6 cars at one time with maybe only 1 not driveable.
Good luck.
