Default Rear brake when stopping?

sorry if this is dumb but i've never ridden a bike. i was wondering if it's typical for somebody to use their rear brake near the end of coming to a stop. i came across a video on youtube where the guy says the bike is less likely to slide out on you with the rear brake, on gravel and such, but typically just used near the end of the stopping process.

here's the vid

Ill use it to wipe off the rust from rain.. and maybe for some extra stoppage power when my right foot gets bored.

Your front brake provides approximately 70% of your total braking power. The rear makes up the rest of the total braking. The fastest way to come to a complete and total stop is to properly use both brakes. I will only use the rear brake in two situations: setting my corner speed midturn or coming to a complete stop.

It all depends on how much you practice using your rear brake. Just like anything else on your bike.

I use both brakes + downshifting (engine braking) all the time.

That video "Speed on 2 Wheels" posted up recently showed a demonstration. They showed front brakes used, back brakes used, and front + back brakes. The front + back and front brakes only had approximately the same stopping distance.

its that extra few feet that can make a big diff

i say even if you dont NEED to use the rear brakes, use them to get used to them. this way when you NEED them u dont over due it

using the rear brake on the street is pointless.

you will not see a difference from just front, to both front and rear. and if you do, then you are not using the front brake enough.

i can see using the rear brake to settle the bike, but you have to be really booking it, and if you are going that fast on the street you are dumb.

use the rear brake when you go off the road onto grass or something.

Except when you're coasting to a stop and are trying to rest your throttle hand.

This is my first season riding but 95% of the time, I've used front+back. I guess it just feels more natural to me.

LOL... says the guy who doesn't ride farther than 20 minutes from his Mommy's house.

Come see me when you're out riding all day and your hand cramps.

"Wait guys, I gotta stop... my hand is cramping! Pull over here!"

Whatever you say Paul.
