Best brake upgrade?
Hi guys I have a 96 civic dx, with stock rotors in front and drum brake in the back. I want to upgrade them, but I don't know what to upgrade to. Some people tell me that for my stock setup with my d16 that I shouldn't need an upgrade. Maybe its true, but what if I decide to go for a B series or K series swap, is it necessary then?
My plan is to buy Sti or Evo or Porsche Calipers and upgrade the rear with GSR brakes, and maybe Power Slot rotors. Then I will buy Earls/Goodridge Braided brake lines, and new ebc pads, with good fluid. Either this or just update to powerslot rotors, gsr rear brake conversion with Brembo brake caliper covers(which cost around $30 bucks).

i really dont think you need sti or evo or porsche brakes...really...
if you're just going for functionality..for you D16, just get 92-95 civic EX/Si front brakes and stainless braided lines all around...maybe brembo blanks and some new pads...
for a swap later on to Bseries or Kseries...maybe front GSR rotors/calipers would be great.

A GSR 4 disc brake swap would be enough - regardless of any motor swap you do to that civic. Looking at evo or sti calipers and such is just pathetic for a civic - and porsche, lmao, what's next, wanna trampose the ferrari emblem onto the front implace of ur honda "H?"
GSR 4 disc swap - use stock blanks, stock pads, etc.
DO NOT get slotted rotors as this isn't a track car and it'll just wear out ur brakes faster. You don't need special brake lines either but if u feel u wanna blow the money on 'em, more power to ya.
You dont' need any kind of brake upgrade, even with an engine swap, that's the part I don't understand. People keep saying with a swap you need a better braking system - and in the same breath they say they don't violate the speed limit. So I'm confused as to why they need a better braking system with their engine swap - but whatever works, it's your money that you're pisssing away....I mean spending....
GSR stock 4 wheel disc system, regular non slotted/drilled rotors, if u want the braided brake lines go for it - completely unneccessary (but againt his whole upgrade's unneccessary so I'm talking to a wall).
I can only ask...Please don't embarass a porsche, evo, or sti by putting those calipers on a honda civic with a stock POS D16 engine. With that swap you put real cars to shame - it's also complete rice - why not just swap the whole porsche engine in ur little eco **** box? Might as well **** off both the pple in the civic world as well as the porsche world.
Though as much as I hate you just by reading your post I'm tryin to help you here. Most you'll need is GSR 4 disc with GSR calipers and GSR rotors. You can't go larger pads but you can go name brand pads such as brembo. Same with your rotors except you can go larger, just make sure it won't interfere with the rim. The steel braided brake lines will do absolutely nothing but change the pedal feel.
In the end it's all up to you so why even bother asking for advice? I still can't believe you even suggested putting any of those systems from different cars (asside from the GSR suggestion) on that stock eco **** box....that's just ******* amazing.

I might get flamed a little for this, but I really don't care, it's just my opinion. I agree with Syndacate. I think that brake "upgrades" are some of the most wasteful, pointless bullshit most people can do to their cars. I say most, because I'll agree that 400, 500 and 600 hp+ cars can use all the crazy 13" rotors 8 pistons calipers and all that nonsense.
But when I see people in a 93 Civic hatch with a B16 swap, and some $1200 braking system, I can't help but laugh.
I can understand upgrading the pads, maybe the rotors, and putting in some high quality fluid. Maybe...even stainless lines or a rear disc conversion. But thats it.
I have EBC pads, Brembo rotors, and some good fluid, and thats IT. Car stops on a ******* dime.
IMO, do some minor upgrades, and take the money that you were going to dump into the brakes, and do a swap, or build your stock motor.

i've always wanted rear discs because drums suck to maintain / service. but when i broke off the bleeder in my front calipers i was offered JDM EG6 brakes for 150 CAD front and 150 CAD rear...**** cheap, and they came with s/s lines
so, no question, the bigger brakes will do me some good, especially if i get sticky tires now (since im in the market for tires) and a bigger motor in spring.

right - the brakes may stop the wheels faster, but not necessarily the car. If you have bald tires, an upgraded braking system won't do too much.

i am just asking bc i am pretty clueless when it comes to brakes.
if i upgrade, pads and fluid i would be good to go as far as the brake area goes?
my 99ex is a daily driver with minor engine upgrades that will never see a track.

99-00 Si Conversion - It's cheap and you get rear's
Hawk HPS Pads
Earl or Goodridge SS lines
Motul Brake Fluid RBF 600 or 5.1 "depending on how much you want to spend"
OEM Rotors, or Slotted that have been machined "depending on how much you want to spend"
and some nice tires
