Default How many of you...

...would ride without a helmet if your state didn't have a law for it?

I drove into Kentucky (no helmet law) to get some seats for my car, and seriously 99% of the people I saw on motorcycles didnt have ANY gear whatsoever including a helmet!

My girlfriend and I were just completely stunned...because a lot of the helmetless riders we saw were on the interstate!

I don't just understand how careless and basically stupid these people are, sure it's their life and everything but do they not care anything about their own well being?

However, there is hope, when we stopped to get some gas/drinks we saw two bikes sitting at the gas station (newer GSX-R 1000 and Lightning XB9), the guy on the GSX-R was wearing shorts, t-shirt, tennis shoes, and a helmet, the bro on the XB9 was in jeans and a t-shirt also with tennis shoes, no helmet/gloves/anything. So I was somewhat pleased that the guy on the GSX-R 1000 had atleast some sense to ATLEAST wear a helmet.

Alright, so answer truthfully, `specially you NOVA hoes.

i would still always wear full gear. it has been beaten into my head since i was old enough to ride. you always wear all the gear available and if you dont wear at least a helmet then you just dont ride it is that simple.

I live in MN. The only time you HAVE to wear a helmet in MN, is either if your under 18 years old, or are riding on a permit.

If your over 18, and have the motorcycle endorsment, you arent required to wear a helmet. I think this is the most rediculous thing ever, simply because there IS a manditory seat belt law in MN.

So you cant, whether you want to or not, ride in a car and not be buckled up, but your not required to wear a helmet when riding a motorcylce?????? Thats so rediculous, i cant even begin to wrap my mind around it.

Anyway, over the last 2 years i havent been wearing my helmet as much as i should. I consider myself lucky though as i learned, or the fear was put in me with out me having to get messed up. 2 guys locally were killed this summer, neither wearing helmets, and my brother in law went down in mpls without a helmet 2 weeks ago. He was ok, but bruised up pretty badly. It was near 90 degrees today, and i rode for three hours. A* shoes, Leather Jacket, Leather full Gloves, and Helmet. I dont plan on going anywhere without the gear anymore...its just not worth it.

Here in Pa you don't have to wear a helmet. Alot of cruser riders dont wear helmets, most sport bike riders do.

I for one allways wear it, and I never would go out riding without one.

I dont understand how people without full face helmets deal with road debris such as rocks and bugs. I know there have been some instances where the rock/bug that hit my helmet would have hurt like a bitch if i was helmetless.

I'm way too much of a *****, I dont even ride with an open visor in the city. I just hate the feeling of wind on my face.

Is this where Ross and I argue about the politics of compulsory helmet use?

I have sucked 3 sets of contact lenses out of my eyes by having my visor open. I dont wear full gear but I always wear my lid and gloves. I feel so naked without them.

Im probably gonna get flamed, but I think I would ride without one if I was travelling <5 miles from my house, non highway.

Unfortunately, you are probably correct.

the better question would be, why would you not wear your helmet.

so easy to damage your brain or to kill yourself, even going 5mph. how would you like to have your obituary say, "died going 10 mph b/c he didn't have a helmet on". we're not all thick-headed like rothlisburger

Why is a good question. Why dont people wear full leathers 100% of the time?

Because:

They are expensive. (so are hospital bills)

They are hot. (so is burning skin from road rash)

They take too long to put on and take off.

etc etc.

People can always come up with excuses why they don't wear gear, including helmets.

+1.

I know its not the most intelligent thing to do, but I still would do it.

i dont think there should be any helmet or seatbelt laws...it should be up to the person...if they want to take a chance and get killed let them; for me however, i will always wear my helmet and seatbelt...

Good point. Eventhough I've let my passenger ride with just a tanktop and boyshorts (+ helmet). I have a passenger riding jacket, and 3 sets of extra gloves but she refuses.

That I woudl definitely not do. I wouldn't want to be held responsible for anything that happened because I let her on the back of my bike wearing less than I consider standard for myself.
