I bought my 93 hatchback 3 days ago for $500 from a friend of mine. I got a 'smoking' deal on the car because the car had a horendous problem with blowing white smoke out the exhaust. It only smoked upon hard acceleration, but during cruising speeds it wasn't too bad. I began working on the car yesterday and removed the head from the car. It seems the previous owner had attempted to solve the problem as the headgasket is brand new and there is liquid gasket globbed all over any place where there should be a gasket.

Anyway, I suspected the valve guides to be toast and I began to price out a new head. However, upon removal of the intake manifold, I found large deposits of oil on the intake runners. The engine is a D15B7


This is the intake side of the head. Quite a bit of fresh oil where it should be somewhat clean.


This is the intake manifold itself. A lot of fresh oil sitting there.


I suspect this is where the oil is entering the intake manifold, there is quite a bit of oil deposit in this hole.


Here you can see how much of a deposit there is.


I'm not sure what this valve is... possibly a PCV valve. Is this supposed to have oil in it?

So what do you guys think? Is there supposed to be oil in that fitting? If someone could go and see if there D15B7 has a large deposit in that fitting, that would be great. Someone help me get this thing on the road so I can start the bodywork early next month

 

do u comp. test, miles on engine? this is most likely blow-by, get rid of that piece of **** b7!

your on the right track. Try pinching off the pcv system.

PCV Valve comes from the oil seperator box on the block, so it may have oil in the tube... they are like 3$ to replace.

 

My guess is bad rings and a bad head gasket. White smoke eh? That would be coolant. Start with a head gasket and make sure all your vacuum bits are good but white smoke is a head gasket or rings.

 

Rings are great. Forgot to add the compression test came across a 160-158-159-160, which is my reasoning for disecting the top end.

The oil seperator box might be blown, I checked it and it's shooting a lot of oil towards the PCV valve. I assume it's not supposed to, am I correct?

That tells you very little. Have you done a leakdown test?

The excessive blow-by tells me to look at the rings. Valve guide seals generally show leakage when the intake system is under vacuum, and not under acceleration. The buildup in the PCV lines and intake manifold would indicate to me that the oil is being broken down and volatilized. I still say it is time for new rings.

But if my rings were trashed I would see a drop in compression. The compression is very good for this engine.

As well the build-up of oil is only in that one fitting, the others are spotless. Which makes it quite apparent that the oil entered through that one fitting.

 

does anyone know if this should have oil in it? I need to know asap.

 

Did you have to add any oil to it when you were driving?

 

I only drove it a matter of across town, and from there it used a fair amout of oil
