importing a crx
i was bored today and was doing a bit of searching to see how i can get a crx in the country, but not worried about registration...i just want to physically have it here...
i stumbled across this website...
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/import...5.htm
"All 1988-1995 Canadian automobiles (gasoline or diesel fueled), light-duty trucks (gasoline or diesel fueled) and heavy-duty gasoline fueled engines are considered by EPA to conform with U.S. emission requirements."
when i was trying to import a SE, i was told by an importer that it needed to have airbags after 1989...i guess this really isnt true, and possibly he just didnt want to waste his time for very little money?
so if this is the case, if someone imports and registers a SiR into Canada, i wonder if that will make it a lot easier to bring it into the US...

So, uh,.......you just ignore the numerous times I've mentioned the above?
B/c I've definitely said somtething about the US and Canada having the same standards in my How To thread, and to you on CRXC about it being easier to import from Canada.
Disclaimer: The above is not to be interpreted as **** talk.

BTW if your not concerned with registration, just have a Canadian register it and drive it into the US and take a Plane home, that's what I was gonna do. Tihz_Wa of JDMU was gonna do it for me

If that's what you interpreted, you didn't pay too much attention.
It's not impossible, just ungodly expensive and complicated and time consuming.
If you've ever heard me say it's impossible, I just say that b/c nobody in our community has the money to do it legally. And if they do: WTF are you waiting for?!?!
Taken from my Importing how to, right at the very top:

and upon further investigation it might be hard because from canada you need a letter from Honda saying the car meets safety equiptment in canada and will conform to the US. I heard that Canadian honda doesnt do this...
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/....html
also you need a RI (registered importer) to do this as well...
like what theft-deterant system would be needed? they never came stock...

Also from my How To, same paragraph as the above excerpt:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by G0crxG0 »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">So, to conform with DOT FMVSS Regulations, you need a letter from the manufacturer (Honda) stating the car conforms with US FMVSS Regulations.
Well, here's the thing: Unless you live in Canada and are moving here, you cannot request this letter. To request it you must fax them a Candian Title/registration card, bill of sale, and proof of insurance.
But that doesn't matter, as one Honda rep I spoke with (I called several times to see if I got different answers) one I spoke with told me she'd do me a favor and see if the letter was available based of the VIN of the CRX VT I was lookin into getting. She said any European or Asian model wouldn't conform and the forms would be unavailable no matter what.</TD></TR></TABLE>
When they talk about theft deterant systems, their taklin about locks and what not. They dont expect it to come with an alarm, their just not gonna let you import a car that could be stolen w/o problem.
IDK about the RI, when I spoke with my local customs officer he told me we could handle all of it there if I had the proper documentation
EDIT: I forgot to add that I contacted Honda of North America with the VT's VIN and I was told under no circumstances would I ever be able to obtain such a letter.

"The importer obtains a letter from the vehicle’s original manufacturer, on the manufacturer’s letterhead (and not that of a franchised dealer), identifying the vehicle by vehicle identification number (VIN) and stating that the vehicle conforms to all applicable FMVSS except for the labeling requirements of Standards Nos. 101 Controls and Displays and 110 Tire Selection and Rims or 120 Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles other than Passenger Cars, and/or the specifications of Standard No. 108 Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment, relating to daytime running lamps."

I have an Uncle who is a lawyer for Honda (he's fluent in japanese, so he handles all the Honda NA and Honda JP stuff) and I've never heard the requirement of the letter from Honda put in the above context, if all it needs to be is a Honda Letterhead paper with the listed info on it, I don't see why my uncle couldn't just make me one. IDK if he'd do that though, since in the end it'd still be illegal as he doesn't know for sure if it does comply or not.
