Default The truth about Geico....

Hey guys I came across this bit of info. Cant tell you if its 100% true though. i thought you guys just might want a heads up. Courtousy NSXprime.com

The Truth About GEICO
Some things to consider before you consider using Geico insurance

Geico invested heavily into Laser Tech, the leading traffic LIDAR manufacturer

Geico gives away radar and laser units to any police agency that wants to write more tickets

Geico testified before legislatures that we don't need/deserve certain rights and has canceled policies of people who admitted to owning LEGAL radar detectors

Geico is a founding member of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety that among other things still claims we'd be better off if we kept 55, ignoring the 9th straight year of fatality rate drops.

My only experience with Geico was just getting a quote from them for fun.

Premium (FULL coverage) with State Farm for my fleet: $735 per six months.
Premium (shitty coverage) with Geico for my fleet: $1800 per six months.

Age 26 (at the time), clean record. No at-fault accidents, no tickets. Could not get $0 deduct. comprehensive on any of my vehicles with Geico. Could not get increased towing (have it on the Scout and Volvo), could not get increased rental car allowance, could not get extra electronics and media coverage (cd's, sub and amp, **** like that).

Geico is a scam, and sucks a fat one

They've been pretty decent with me so far. I haven't made any claims, but my rates are pretty damn good.

I do want to make sure however that if the time comes when I DO need to make a claim, they wont bullshit with me. Anyone have any claim experiences?

With my Gsr, I filed a claim of vandalism. They cut me a check for 3k just for the right and left side of the car. No problems with the adjuster, met with him for about 10 minutes so he could take pictures.

That was a few years back. I dont know too many people who have Geico insurance.

this car insured under geico rear ends me while trying to parallel park.

i come out to find that the guy had "parked" his car into my rear bumper ... make the police report...and geico says "too bad, you probably parked your rear bumper into their car."

It's absolutely true, and it's not just Geico. All the major insurance companys do that. They donate and subsidize the purchase of speed enforcement equipment to police. In their minds, it is in their best interests... People drive slower = less accidents = less claims = more profit.

In PA, where only State Troopers can use radar and laser, the insurance co's are constantly lobbying the state legislature to allow local law enforcement to use these timing devices too.

Using a radar detector is illegal in VA, right? Is is true that in VA, having a radar detector is legal and having it mounted in your car is legal? But having it turned on is illegal?

I ask because I have a V1, and I drive to VA quite a bit for work. (In fact, I'm going down there Monday...)

I've never found anyone better than State Farm, by the way. It's a huge insurance company, but very adaptable and affordable.
I agree with George. Of course, I'm slightly biased, as my mother has been a State Farm agent for 20+ years

Pros: Local agent, local claims offices, large network of "approved" shops (ie you don't even mess with the money - SF pays the shop)
Cons: None for me, but some drivers may have trouble getting a policy with SF. They like good drivers.

That to me is a con... I want to choose the body shop that does my work to my standards... I dont want to have to pick from "their list" because:

1 its my car
2 I want it done right
3 "the best" shop is almost never on there because of the price being high due to the high quality... Thats the place I want doing my work... I dont car how much it costs you guys...

You don't have to use an "approved" shop. You still have the choice to use whoever you want. State Farm will just cut you a paper check, and then you pay the shop yourself. I believe you can get the claims adjuster involved if the work ends up costing more than the estimate.

Using an "approved" shop just means you don't have to deal with the money directly.

A few years back, State Farm even paid for a lacquer job on an old Porsche that I owned after a Volvo station wagon tried to take it out.
Sounds like one of those drunken NC rednecks! Them and their svveedish rolling boxes!

If the road is clear and you're relatively safely driving 75, I really doubt anyone's going to give you a ticket.
This depends on the trooper/officer, of course. I've gotten a ticket in a situation like that before, but I'm sure people have also gotten off without one.

How does the aircraft enforcement work? They time you accross two lines on the road and assume an average? Do they take a pic of the plates and mail you a ticket, or do they radio to a trooper on the road? Just curious.

Hanover county outside Richmond does not use laser. I spoke with an officer about radar coverage and how techonology has improved radar. When a radar Illuminates a group of cars it's the officer's call on which car is going the fastest. The signature is usuallly biased towards the largest vehicle because it contains the most metal. i.e tactor trailers. If the officer, with cetainty, can identify a vehicle that is travelling faster, then he/she can try and get a speed from that vehicle and pull that individual over. The newest radars can now determine the individual speeds of a group of cars. It is still up to the police officer to determine which vehicle is which. His advice was to stay in the "slow" lane. They immediately start looking in the faster lanes of traffic for speeders. Also, lasers do not work on the move. The vehicle must be stationary for lidar to work.

I have heard rumors that some Insurance Companies actually search the internet sites and look for people who have their insurance and race their cars and then procede to cancel their insurance. The two that were pointed out were Progressive and Geico.

Take it for what it is worth, here say but thought I would throw it in
